Hi,
I am finally getting my new puppy tomorrow. She is being shipped to me. I will be being water and food with me to the airport and my breeder told me to use pancake syrup instead of nutri-cal as soon as she gets off the plane. She says that the syrup goes into her system and the nutri-cal takes a while. Is this the right thing to do? I have an appointment for the vet first thing Friday morning. Thanks for your advise.
Trish
I think the right thing to do would be to fly over yourself to pick up the puppy so that she can fly in the cabin with you where her safety would be assured. Congratulations on your new baby-to-be! Any chance you can change your plans and pick up your puppy (please read the "horror story" on the Main Page about flying animals in cargo...)

Trish...your arrangement to receive the puppy long distance is in place and now we will hope that all goes well. For every "horror" story many puppies are shipped safely. I would bring pancake syrup and nutrical. The trip is going to be quite disorienting and though you want the puppy to ingest some glucose based something immediately after the flight and drink some water...she may not...don't freak out..but it might be good to have both choices with you. Where do you live? I ask only because I am wondering what airlines within the USA are shipping during the summer months. Generally, I would say that it is better to fly out and get the puppy and have it in the cabin with you. Let us know when yoru shipment arrives..ha! Best of luck

Hi,
It's to late to change plans now, everything has been booked and paid for. If I could have I would have picked her up. She will be shipped tomorrow morning from Mississippi and coming here to New York. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Trish
Hi,
She is flying from Mississippi on Continental Airlines. I live in New York. I will let you know tomorrow how everything went. Thanks
Trish
Hi Trish,
Looking forward to hearing from you right away that everything went fine. Maybe when you get your second Maltese (!), you can either find one within driving distance or fly out yourself and bring her/him back in the cabin with you.

Hi Trish,
Congrats on your new puppy! I am sure everything will be ok. I have had friends who had their puppies shipped to them with no problems. I myself have always been to scared to have them shipped. I drove 17 hours to pick up Cookie because I was worried that the pressure changes from the plane ride will scare her. Luckily, I only had to drive 7 hours for Nibbler since his breeder met me during her show tour which came closer to me :) Charmaine, Cookie and Nibbler
Geez....New York City in this heat...My suggestion would be to get to the airport very early and make friends with who ever is in charge and insist that this puppy be unloaded FIRST. What airline would permit an animal to be shipped in this heat? Don't believe them when they tell you that any "holding" area is airconditioned. Let us know of a safe arrival!Vita
Hi,
Yes , her name is Bella. I am waiting to hear from my breeder that all went well at the airport and that she is on her way. I am going to be a wreck until she lands at the airport. Please say a little prayer for Bella that she arrives safe. I will let you guys know as soon as I get home with her. Thanks,Trish
Hi,
My puppy was being shipped from Mississippi to Houston where she was changing planes to come to me in New York. She made it to Houston but then because of bad weather her flight got delayed and then cancelled. She was going to be put on the next flight but that was delayed also. Now it was 5:00 and she has been in Houston airport since 11:00. Continental airlines called and said it would be a good idea since she is small to spend the night in the kennel so she could eat, have some water and rest. They would put her on the first flight in the morning. I called the kennel to check up on her and they told me she was at the vet because her body temperature was low and so was her white blood count. They said they would call when she returned from the vet.
A couple minutes later I received a call from Continental Airlines telling me the she is now in the emergency room because her white & red blood cells were low and so was her body temperture. They told me they would do all they can do for her.
At 10:00 Continental called again to tell me that she didn't make it. They asked for my permission to do an autopsy. I will let you know what she died of when I find out tomorrow.
My breeder had a health guarantee but what are my options now? Thanks for listening
Trish
