Biting
by Bob
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
BitingFirst of all, I would like to thank everyone for their input on my last message on house training and night crying. I will try some of the ideas. Oliver did not cry at all last night. I hope it continues.

Oliver has started now to bite. It is a little like playfullness with biting. He comes up to you to give you some licks, but then takes your finger or toe and grabs on to it like a toy bone. Since he is a puppy (14 weeks), I know he probably doesn't know any better, but how do I discourage this habit. My approach has been to give him his toy bone to chew on when he does it, but it seems to encourage him more. I also tell him "No" or "bad doggy".

Will he grow out of this on his own or are there any other suggestions?

DISCUSSION:

He is probably teething, hes a baby. Give him lots of things to chew on and he will grow out of it. Also tell him "ouch, or no" Good luck!!

Bob: Tell Him "NO Bite". If you just say bad dog or no, he will not learn, no what. KoKo learned it faster than Shayna, last night Shayna was grabbing my toes. Gentle, but I still told her "No Bite". It will come be patient.

Bob, you're in for a treat! Buster is 8 months old and still biting. Your baby being only 14 weeks has those little very sharp baby teeth. He will start to lose them any time around 5 or 6 mos old. Yes, keep giving him other options instead of your hands. My hands were torn up! Ha! But I let him do it. Bad mommie. Buster is slowly growing out of it. Just work with Oliver. He will learn. Good luck.

Bob, what fun 14 wk old puppies are! My suggestion to you is this: when he bites he's not being bad, just a normal puppy. However, since he's living in your house and you make the rules, he must not bite. Soooo, teach him how hard to bite. When he bites (mouths) hard and you feel it, let him know it was too hard by yelling, "Ouch!" He will look quite startled and stop biting for a second (by the way, don't jerk your arm away), and that's when you say, "Good puppy!" This is teaching him bite inhibition in a simialr way that he learns from his littermates and mom.

My name is Chad and I have a 10.5 week old boy named Sammy. He is also in the biting stage. I feel your pain. I have read the responses and will try to implement them into Sammy's life. If you receive any other important information please let me know. I wish us both good luck.
