ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
In the past few months I heard some show people talk about
their Maltese's coat and puting it in oil (not sure of the
right teminology). Exactly how does this process work or is
it only for when showing your Maltese?

DISCUSSION:
Most of the time only people who are showing their dogs, put them in oil. I
not only breed Maltese & show them, I also board dogs. I tell people that
if they are going to be gone for a few days and their dog is in coat, it is
a good idea to put them in oil. This way, when they come back, their dog is
still in coat. No big mats and tangles to try to get out. Also, it is a
good idea on dogs that are cut down, to put them in oil once in a while, as
it helps condition their skin and hair. Most people that have dogs for
pets, don't want to look at their dog with oil in the coat, as it is not a
pretty site, (kind of like looking at a wet dog), also, they don't want the
oil all over everything. There are all kinds of oils, some are heavier than
others, some will not come off on clothes and furniture, others will. I
have found for show dogs, the heavier oils do a better job, but a lot of the
time, I will put my dogs in a light oil just to hold them for a day or two.
