Grooming-14 week old

ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
by Lauren

Hi, I have a 14 week old female Maltese. She gets bathed once a week but she won't let me grrom her. She justs bites the brush and and thinks it is play time. When she does this I tell her "No" in a loud voice but she doesn't pay any attention. What can I do? Also, when would be a good age to start Obedience School? Thanks again. LAuren

DISCUSSION:

Please bear in mind when reading topics pertaining to health issues, that many of these questions were answered by helpful Maltese owners with no formal education in veterinarian medicine. When in doubt seek a professionals advise.

Lauren, My puppy is twelve weeks old and we have just enrolled in a puppy kindergarten class. The instructor told me that as long as he has had two sets of shots he could come. About the grooming, Doc also plays with the brush and comb (and anything else he can reach). I have found that giving him a toy of his own helps some. Good Luck!

Hi Lauren, My girl Bailey did the same thing - it was always playtime when I tried to brush her after bathing. I now put a bone or something that will hold her interest while brushing and talking softly to her. She is much better at it since I try to brush her at least once a day it seems she is getting used to it. Also, when you're finished (try to start out with short brushing times - just a few minutes and with each time make it just a bit longer) be sure to give your girl a treat and I think you'll see brushing time will get much easier. Good Luck!
