Types of barks - meaning

ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
by Ruben

My 7 month old's bark is different depending on the situation. A greating is a series of barks, and a howling is a warning. After I tell her NO or quiet, she grunts and settles down. She feels that she must bark (series of high pitched barks) at every loud noise. How do I stop this habit. Unfortunately, I believe she learned this in obedience class since she heard the other dogs barking. Is she trying to talk to me when she the urge to ? I tried the can with coins and NO, quiet, and growling like a dog. It just makes her even more wild. Nothing is working. Any advise? Thanks

Hi Reuben, I have had similar problems with Baby. Recently thru this website I learned that sometimes when she looks at me and barks for no apparent reason at all she is trying to tell me something. In Baby's case she does this in the evening when I am watching TV. Come to understand she is bored and wants me to play with her. Its become quite a game to her to get attention in this way. Good luck interpreting your fur baby's barking.

I was told by someone when I got my puppy that I should ignore him when he barks, whimpers, or makes other types of noises otherwise, he will learn that all he has to do is make that noise to get attention. After taking that advice, he has stopped barking and whimpers very softly now. He's so quiet sometimes I wish he'd make more noises!
