Estimating Maltese Growth
When do maltese stop growing? The lastest that I've heard was between 5 1/2
to 6 months but no more after that. So far my puppy is 4 pounds at 5
months, if that is the case (that maltese stop growing at 6 months), do you
think he will be more than 5 pounds? Thanks.

- Estimating size on any Maltese is tricky. If you are a breeder working
within parameters that are familiar to you, i.e. a repeated breeding, it is
much easier. As a general rule you take a pup's weight at 12 weeks of age and double it,
then add a half pound to be on the "safe side" and you should be close to
the full adult weight. Each "line" of Maltese has it's own idyosyncracies and growth patterns and only by knowing more info on its pedigree can I be more specific.

- If a person is concerned about size and appearance of a maltese he wants to
purchase he should not purchase it before four months of age. That is why
we that breed and show keep them as long as six months, we can't tell either
some stop growing and some just keep right on going, but the breeder can
give you a good estimate at four months and you can tell what is going to
look like.
