I am curious as to how young a puppy is when it is determined if it is "pet" or "show" quality. Also, is it possible for a "pet" quality maltese to have the same gorgeous coat as a "show" quality maltese?

Yes ,it is possible for a pet Maltese to have just as beautiful a coat as a show Maltese sometimes even better. Determining whether a pup is a pet or show dog can be determined as early as 8 weeks or as late as 12 months. A pups appearance shifts and changes as they grow.
