Favorite treats?

ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
by Patti

What your dogs favorite treats? I have purchased so many different kinds of doggy treats, that go uneaten, I'm wondering if other owners have the same problem. The only ones my dog really really loves, are those lamb lungs, I feed just a tiny portion at one time, but he'll do anything for them. -Patti & Buster

DISCUSSION:

Please bear in mind when reading topics pertaining to health issues, that many of these questions were answered by helpful Maltese owners with no formal education in veterinarian medicine. When in doubt seek a professionals advise.

Mine love pig ears, both our 7 month old and our 7 year old! I've never heard of lamb lung. Maybe they would like those, too! They also get the standard Milkbones, but only 1 or 2 a day.

I have a 20 month old maltese, and I have tried quite a few different treats. Some of Skippy's favorites are the Science Diet growth treats, Charlee Bear treats with liver, & Recipe treats, but his favorite we discovered is an empty cake ice cream cone. When he eats these he eats the bottom out first so he can stick his paw through the top. I try to keep Skippy on the harder treats instead of the soft ones.

I have just purchased my new Maltese puppy, but not recieved it yet, however, the breeder, said that all of her Maltese really like Beef Jerkey, the human kind, instead of the kind for dogs. Can this harm them in anyway?

A while back I had seen in the Archives that a favorite treat/chew was a Carrotbone (made , I think, by the nylabone people). It is, supposedly, easily digestable. Of course, I went out and got one for SweetPea. She was wild for it!! A word of caution, however, I had a heck of a time getting it away from her--and the next time I just left it with her. Well, it was a big carrotbone--when I returned she had eaten the whole thing!! Easily digestable or not, she was not her normal peppy self for a few days. The next time, I'll get the smallest one they make and try breaking it in half. I also tried real baby carrots, but she didn't like them as well.

My babies love Milk Bones. I never give my dogs the pig ears, rawhide bones etc. I had a dog one time that chewed one up and got a piece lodged in her throat. I had to reach in and take it out or she would have choked for sure. I don't know why they don't have a warning out for those type treats because they can be so dangerous. Another real treat my dogs all love is "Nutri Cal" by Evsco. It's a dietary supplement from the vet in a tube. The breeder I got my babies from gave this to all her pups. They will almost do anything to get it. It has cod liver oil in it. My dogs loved it so much I asked my vet if it was okay to continue giving it to them and he said it was fine. Easy way to train dogs to do tricks with this stuff.

Hi, Cathy Brown posted 3 recipes on the discussion board on 6-21-97, they are called Bow-Wow BonBons, Liver Treats, and a birthdy cake for maltese. I have tried the Bow-Wow bonBons and the liver treats and my two maltese dogs love them. They are not hard to make at all. If anyone would like to have them email me or ( or I suppose you could email cathy at cbrite@erols.com) and I would be happy to email you these recipes.

Emma loves the Nylabone Carrot bones- though a word of warning: she's orange afterwards around her mouth and on her front paws. It washes off easily though (I figure she loves them so much, I can put put up with the grooming). Also, for housetraining I have been using Solid Gold Lamb Jerky, and she loves it. It's great because I can break it up into small pieces easily.

Hello, Patti! Jazz loves the edible Nylabone Carrot bone, too. As Jessica said, it does leave orange color on his face and front paws, which is washable. It also makes his stools orange! When I went to buy him some yesterdy, I noticed a new edible Nylabone---it is liver. He likes it bunches, too, and it seems to be a little harder to eat it as fast as the carrot bone...no orange face, toes or stools, either. The edible chicken and cheese Nylabone is okay with him, but not his favorite. Another treat he loves is sliced baby carrots.

My little sweetie love cookies!! Espicially the peanutbutter ones! You can get them at your local Petsmart. They is no brand name they are in bulk at the front of the store. She also enjoys her Pet Tab vitamins but she can only have one a day and they are so good for her.

Several people have mentioned carrot bones, but Maggie really likes good old fashioned Carrots! We peel and wash the carrot, and give it to her. She then carries it around until she finds the perfect place to eat it. Once this is accomplished, she sits with the carrot between her HANDS and chomps away! Sometimes she doesn't finish it in one sitting, so we have to keep an eye out for the "hairy" ones hidden around the house. We just talked to a vet, and he just suggested that we don't let her eat them too often because Maltese have such sensitive stomachs.

Marsha, thanks for the advise on the liver flavored bone, Buster loves it. We are letting him have it when we leave in the a.m., as a special treat. He already has one end chewed down. Thanks again everyone. Patti & Buster

My baby is 10 years old and has always been picky about what he plays with and eats. We actually found a new food which he is crazy about. It is totally healthy called Solid Gold sold through some distrubutors (not me)and some pet stores. Anyway my baby loves it so much that that is now what he receies for treats, very eagerly. My vet whom I love suggested CET pet chews. THey take quite awhile to go through and are relatively inexpensive. They contain an enzyme which interacts with his saliva to prevent dental decay. And he actually plays with them!!! A major improvement. We have spent countless money on toys and these are what he likes. We buy the CET chews from the vet, although I bet you could find them at pet stores. Just keep in mind that they are NOT regular rawhide chews! Good Luck. Malisa

Our Macy loves Friskies Prime Steaks, Milk Bones, Pupparonis and those Iams bones. I'm afraid she is quite spoiled as she likes the Nylabones too. She doesn't eat her food often, but gets a good supply of the chewable bones and seems to be quite healthy.

Our Maltese is almost two and we have a diabetic poodle, nine, who cannot eat regular treats. We give both of them little pieces of lettuce for a treat and they love it, never grow tired of it.
