Dog Nibbling?
by Mo Hariri
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
I have a one year old Maltese dog. He looks to softly nibble quickly on my feet or hand sometimes when I am sitting around. He looks like he is trying to be affectionate. He is very careful and almost doing it with his lips. I can not understand what he means when he is doing that. Any body has any ideas?

DISCUSSION:

Mo, its 'mouthing'. He does it because he doesnt know its unacceptable. Its an easy one to correct. Do as his mother would have done when he was young. Make a loud startled "ouch" and give a low growl. He will soon learn what is expected. Perhaps he just wants to play or he's looking for attention or he's just saying he loves you :)Good luck :)

My 16 wk old maltese does the same thing. I think it is a way of playing. I give her a toy to bite on everytime she bites my finger.good luck

It sounds to me like what you said - he is just trying to be affectionate. If it doesn't bother you, I wouldn't worry about it.
