Tylan Results
by Carol McKissack
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Hi everyone, this is just a follow-up to tear staining solutions. I show and breed Maltese and have had a serious tear-stain problem for a long time. I have used everything made for tear-staining and have had no luck. I started using Tylan about six weeks ago, I found the information on this forum. LET ME TELL YOU, it works!!! This is how I use it;

I have 32oz water bottles in my pens and I fill those and add a pinch of Tylan to the water. That's it. The change in their eyes is unbelievable!! No stain coming from the eye. I have used the Milk of Mag, peroxide and Cornstarch to clean the stain that was there before and now I have clean, dry white eyes. Thanks everyone for all the information I have recieved off the forum, we can learn something new all the time.

DISCUSSION:

What is Tylan, and how do I get it?

While I know how happy Carol must be to have found a solution to the tearstaining problem, using Tylan is not be a route most people should take. This is an antibiotic and, as such, it is important to carefully consider the potential ramifications of using it. Always check with your vet. Also, search the archives of this site, as well as the directory under "FAQ - tearstaining". My Lucca's breeder suggested Tylan, but I have never used it. His tearstaining is not all that bad, so I have taken a more conservative route and tried several things. I only use filtered water, limit the amount of grains in his diet and wash his face everyday. I have also added a vitamin/mineral supplement called "Congaplex" to his food which I have had the best results with.

Just to let you know I have consulted with two vets on my tearstaining problem, and they suggested topicals for the eye which didn't work. I am aware of the problems antibiotics can cause and have taken them off. I by no means recommend this as a everyday solution. I also only use bottle water, no dyes in my food and treats, and was pretty much at the end of my rope.

I ordered Tylan from Omaha Supplys out of Omaha, NEB - theres an 1-800 number, I am sure it's in the Maltese only list of pet supplies.

I'll let you know how it gos over the next 6 weeks.

Just a note I have been wondering about Tylan myself. It is not Tetracycline and is not normally used to treat other diseases in dogs. I am having my puppy evaluated as she grows up. I am an obedience person and was thinking that if I can keep up the grooming required as well as learn to do the topknots, I may show her in conformation. I would only consider using this if I do show her. Carol, I was wondering what if any the side effects and dangers of this antibiotic are? Do you use it permanently or only just before and during a show circuit?

Mary I have only used it six weeks and all toll I've used less than a teaspoon in all that time (5 dogs, 5 water bottles) I have two dogs that I am showing now, one special and a bitch almost finished. The problem using antibotics continuously is that if they do need them down the road for a more serious problem they may become ammune to it, so you don't want to use the product for a long time. I've just stopped and they still have nice clean faces. I'll let you know if it reappears. Biancalana Maltese.

Carole, Thanks. I just knew that Tetracycline had other side effects such as teeth yellowing, etc. I din't know if Tylan had any side effects like this (other than just prolonged antibiotic use). How did you know when the tearing had stopped in order to clean up the old stains? Or did you clean first and then use the Tylan?
Mary and Mishief
I started using the Tylan and noticed that the hair that was growing out (new) was white, then I used the Milk of Mag, Peroxide, and Corn Starch to clean up the old stain. Hope that helps. I haven't heard of Tylan causing stains on teeth, I wouldn't recommend it for any puppy under 6 months or puppies that don't have their permenant teeth. I wouldn't take the chance of graying or damage. Biancalana Maltese

Carol, how long before you new it was working and is it nessesary to use for a full six weeks?thanks jean

Jean, I saw an improvement within the first 2 weeks, maybe three. I only used it on my show bitch at first, and saw the improvement because I am constantly cleaning her eyes. Then I gave it to her brother and saw an improvement in the same time frame also. Now everyone was getting it in their bottles, except my expecting bitch. I've since stopped and havn't seen any staining yet.

I change their water bottles every other day since their so big. I fill the 32oz size to a little more than half way and add a pinch (literaly) to the water and shake. That's it! I haven't had a problem with them refusing to drink. They drink just as much. Biancalana Maltese
