Topknot Advice?
by Mary, Andy & Grace
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Grace got her first topknot on Saturday. She looks like Pebbles (but still behaves like BamBam)! I found that I had to use a dab of styling gel to get that babyfine hair to cooperate. It took her quite a bit of time to realize that I was going to get that topknot done and thankfully she settled down after about 30 minutes. My question is how often should I redo it -- every day, twice a day ?? My routine now is to feed the dogs their evening meal, let them play, take them out, and then brush them. Any advice would be helpful.

DISCUSSION:

Mary, in my house, its redo topknots every time the other one pulls it out!!!!!! LOL

Mary: I put topknots in Tuffster's hair and I agree, they look like Pebbles! I think your comment's cute about acting like Bam Bam because that's what Tuff does. When I first got her I put topknots in every day, her hair seemed even then to be too long to just leave down. I don't put topknots in unless she's going somewhere where she needs to look pretty now because I noticed she'd start tugging at her head and trying to pull them out and was afraid it was hurting her. I had to double the band and could get it in on the first try but it was heck to get it doubled (one twist would fall out within minutes and two twists took me forever to do). When I did manage to get it in right, and I also used gel, she'd get it out within about a few hours unless it was too tight. I always took them out at night anyway. I put them in to begin with because she couldn't see with all that hair hanging down and at night she doesn't need to. When I first got her I left the bows in all day but she'd lay in her crate at night and struggle to pull them out. There's no doubt that she was uncomfortable trying to sleep with a bow in her hair. I will put them back in when she's older because she'll have more hair and she'll need to have it put up then and because her hair will be more profuse a bow will be easier to put in. As puppies though I don't know if it's a good idea to do it every day. I'm ordering some that have clips instead of bands from a lady that I met on a website. From what I understand they'll stay in much better and are easier to get in, but I still wouldn't leave them in at night. So to answer your question, in my opinion you need to put them in every day. Definitely take it out at night. Tuff gets these little "eye booger" things, probably because I don't knot her hair everyday and it irritates her eyes a bit but she seemed more irritated when I did put the bow in. I mean think about it... would you want to sleep with barrettes or bows in your hair at night?

Karen, can you please tell me where I can also get the barrettes with the clips? I would love to use these on Layla. I also have the same problem when trying to put the bows in. The first wrap around goes fine but the second wrap around takes forever and I feel so bad for her. I know she just hates it. When she sees me coming with the bows she just has that "Oh NO!" look on her little face. But if I don't put anything in her hair she looks like a Sheep Dog.

Hi, everyone! I was laughing about everyone's topknot experiences-I used to have them too! However, I did think of something that might bear mentioning to new topknot makers. When making a topknot, be sure not to get their long eyelashes in the topknot! My little guy has eyelashes that are almost 2 inches long. If I am sure not to get even one caught up, he leaves the top knot just fine. It's easy to accidently include them because they are white, long, and look just like their hair! If you can't see them right away, just keep looking from different angles until you can recognize the lashes. Hope this helps those new to making the top knots!

Hi all, this is my first stop at this sight...LOVE IT! Holly wears a topknot everyday. We change it when it starts to look bad, or on bath day. She has been wearing one since her hair was long enough to put up. (She's 5 yr. old now) She has gotten used to it. She knows it comes after the blow dry and is followed by "Cookies" for the "Pretty Girl". She likes it when we rant and rave about her being a "Pretty Girl". My advise is to use those neon, glow in the dark "Will not pull or damage any type of hair" rubber bands. I always send them to the "Puppy Parlor" with her. The standard rubber bands break her hair and I have to cut them out. I find the neon ones in drug stores, near the kids barrettes.

The package says, "scunci, no damage poly bands" and "L&N Sales & Marketing Inc., 1663 Republic Road, Huningdon Valley, PA 19006 215-364-5888" I hope this helps. PS Holly's favorite color is Pink.
