slicker or pin brush?
by Dorit
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
I have a 14 wk old female maltese, that I took to the groomer twice so far. Two different groomer and both were using the slicker brush. I asked the secound groomer why she is using a slicker brush on my dog, because I read on the internet and in one of the maltese books I have, that we should never use a licker brush on a maltese. Well the groomer said that the slicker brush does not break the maltese coat like the book said and it takes the matts out much better then a pin brush. She also said that a pin brush is used on show dogs only. If anyone has an answer to which brush is really the best please let me know. I do not want to continue to take my dog to a groomer that uses a slicker brush if it is really not O.K. for our furbaby.

DISCUSSION:

Dorit, I use a pin brush on most of the body and a slicker carefully on the feet and to brush out any slight matting. I use the tail of a comb to get the part straight on the back.

Are you sure it was a slicker brush your groomer was using on your puppy??

I hope that you are grooming the puppy daily. Wondering why a 14 week old would need to go to groomer so often? Well gotta go. It is midnite and Boris needs a little shampoo to freshen the top of his head a bit and a little ear cleaning as well, to keep him sweet to the smell and touch cause he gets to sleep with us again tonite. Good luck with the puppy.

Dorit, perhaps that groomer doesnt groom many Malts! Did you tell her that your Malt is on show all the time? LOL The slicker brush to use on the legs is a very small one; about 1 to 1-1/2" square; and use very carefully.

It doesn't surprise because every time I'm in PetsMart I watch the groomers for awhile. No matter what the dog or cat, what the coat texture, they ALWAYS are using a rather large slicker brush! Before selecting a groomer, ask if they are accustomed to doing Maltese. Greg Larson has a grooming video that shows the entire grooming process. Good luck!

Where can you get the video BeeGee??? I do my own grooming and definitely recommend daily brushing to prevent matting.

Hi Could you give me info on where to order that veido ? I thought I would look at Amozion today ! I take the Pupp's to a Professional Groomer about once a month and do them myself weekly, but I would rather just do them myself, especially since I will have 2 more to bath weekly !! Thanks

Okay, when I bought Chloe, I was tols to use a samll slicker brush. It seems like you know something I don't. So, should I be using the pin brush for every day brushing? Exactly what is it about the pin brush that you don't think is good for the furbaby? Thanks

What about using a comb on my Maltese? Is that bad?

At this point I have all the brushes mentioned in this post and am still wondering what is best solution. Actually I am using all of them a bit, probably because I am afraid using one with do damage. Someone who really has had experience grooming should put up a post here. Opinions would be appreciated. So far, I have a beautifully groomed puppy, must be doing somehting right.

I have worked with a breeder, who of course does his own grooming, and the Pin Brush is it. He uses a comb and pin brush for all grooming (everyday included). A slicker brush DOES and WILL break the coat. Your groomer, as the others have said, must not do maltese. Also, a tio when grooming after a bath: mix some body oil with a cream rinse and water and spray on while brushing out (before drying) and tangles will comb out much more easily. Also, it loosens matts so they can be picked apart by hand (time consuming but worth it :)) LOL!!!

Thanks for all your responds but I am still confused. I went today again to check another groomer and ask some questions. This groomer does a lot of maltese alone when I was there she had 5 maltese waiting to be picked up. She also uses a slicker brush on maltese. She does not believe that it breaks their coat, but she also told me that if I want I could bring my own brush and she will use that. I thought it was fair.
