potty training 3 yr old
by kim
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
I adopted a 3yr old yesterday. she came from a loving home and has been adjusting fairly well except that she's pooping in the house. she was fully trained at her former home except for an occaisional accident. She's been urinating outside but pooped several times in the house today inspite of numerous walks. I show her the poo and tell her "no" and take her outside. I'm hoping that this is just a step back because of the new home and surroundings. Any suggestions?

DISCUSSION:

Kim, Im sure your new little baby just needs time to adjust & learn what you expect from her :) I wouldnt start with "correction training" right away. I would take her out often and praise and treat when she gets it in the right place. I would use the same process as with a young puppy :) Im sure you will do some routine training every day, as we do with all our pets, this is just one of those routines :) Congratulations on your new baby & good luck!

Is it reasonable for me to be expecting her to poo when she's on her tie-out line or is she just never going to go for that?

Kim: I had a similiar problem with my maltese. He would always pee outside like he was suppose to but poop in the house. If Bleu was not such a little dog, there is no way I would have tolerated this. We are in obedience training right now so I asked what we could do to get Bleu to poop outside. Our trainer was stunned. She said that if Bleu comes back into the house after peeing but has not pooped outside that i should immediately put Bleu in his crate. After a few minutes, ake him back outside. If he still refuses to poop - repeat the crate process until he does poop outside. I just tried this two days ago. It took him one 5 minute period in his crate & immediately back outside to get him to do his job outside. Yesterday & today I did not need to put him in his crate. He pooped outside. Maybe I wasn't giving him enough time outside .... who knows! Try giving your new girl a little more time outside. If that doesn't work..try the crating technique. Or ask your vet, trainer, etc for advice.I hope this helps.~Nicole
