Rabies shot for puppy
by vita
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
So Boris survived his last vaccination. He did have a frightening reaction. Of course he got sleepy afterwards, but when I went to pick him up he cried. He was in pain. And he spent some time wrapped in a blanket infront of a heater cause he was shivery. I was not too thrilled. Called the vet and was told that these reactions were normal. I didn't think so. In fact shortly after the call to the vet he came out of it and i didnt need to bring him back in as emergency. It scared me real good. So in two weeks he is ready for the rabies shot. I would like to know what to expect? Are there suggestions I can give to the vet that might make it safer for the puppy? Any adverse reactions to the rabies shot for your puppy? Gee I hope not. This time I want to go in armed with knowledge. Any information would be appreciated.
DISCUSSION:
Hi Vita - Bailey did not have any adverse reactions with any of his shots (including rabies) he was a little sleepy, but as for the shivering and not wanting to be touched, I think you should shop for a new vet. I've been reading your posts, and you may get my e-mail address from Libby, I too live in NYC and my vets are great, they would never say "that is normal" if I called and sounded upset, they should have at least looked at Boris again and maybe give him something else to help.

I recently had a scare also. My Cassidy went in this past Monday for her yearly examination and vaccinations. She has always done well and never had a problem. Not this time!! She had a severe reaction. She was lethargic for 2 days, would not eat or drink water, and was in pain. Her tail was dragging the ground, so you know she was sick. The veterinarian recommended pediatric Benadryl and told me how much to give her. She said she would give her fluids in the office if Cassidy did not start drinking after 48 hours had past. I thank God that Cassidy got over this, but I was really scared. I don't know if I can handle this every time one of my babies goes in for routine vaccinations. The vaccinations are given in the muscle now , my veterinarian says to prevent the cancer sometimes caused by the shots in the skin. I guess I will just be prepared with the Benadryl from now on. I hope your baby is better. Susan...

Hi Vita--About the rabies vaccination, I do have a few suggestions. Nike (2) developed a lump at the vaccination site that even after close to a year, still has not gone away. We took him to see an oncologist in Colorado. They told us that the lump was probably a reaction to the delivery agent in the vaccine--most notably aluminum. If your baby get a vaccine from a multi dose vial, he will receive a higher dose of aluminum. The oncologist recommended that he receive the vaccine from a single dose vial. Ask your vet for this before you go in so that they can order it. Also, the vaccination can be given in the back leg. This is important because it will be easier to amputate if the vaccine related sarcome spreads. This cancer is rare in dogs, but it can happen. Some dogs do develop lumps at the site and they should go away after a while. If it does not go away--and check it every day--I would have the vet look at it. If it grows, it needs to be biopsied. I hope that this information helps. Give your pooch a smooch from Cotton (14) and Nike (2)

Lilly (3months) had reactions the last twotimes she has vacinnes. The first time...lump (which has resolved) and tremors and sleepy which I think is normal to some degree. Even human babies will get sleepy, irritable and feverish after vaccines. But her second set she also started vomiting. She was so pitiful I rushed back to vet and she was given prednisone shot. She was fine the next day. So next week we go back and I am dreding it. I will premedicate with Benadryl.
The vet said something about keeping her there for the day but I think I would rather have her with me but stay close by. Any other recommendations? Thanks Karen M

Is this benadryl for vet use only, or are you talking about adult or pediatric benadryl? How much was the dosage that you gave in advance of the vaccine? Will check this out with the vet and definitely ask for single vial dose. Tnanks for the help.
Bought Boris a harness and leash today, we get closer to seeing the outside world, after this last shot in 2 weeks.

Hi Vita - You can access Libby's e-mail through the newsletter - No, it wouldn't be a good idea to post our e-mails on a public post such as MO, I'll e-mail Libby tommorrow & let her know it's okay. Take care!

Just wanted to tell al that Lilly had her vacinnes today with pre medication. She got a shot of Benadryl and a shot of Prednisone. Then we waited 15 minutes and she recieved her vacinnes. She did great She did sleep quite a bit this afternoon but within about 5 hours she was chasing around the house like always..no trembling and no vomiting.

Hi Vita! Tammy got her rabies shot Monday, along with three other shots. I know every case is different, but she did not react very well. She did vomit a little bit once and was lethargic for the next two days. The vet also did say this was normal and not to worry too much. She ate and drank very little. However, she did manage to "do her business" on her wee wee pads...... she's just a great little girl. She is FINE now!!!!! She is a happy energetic dog again! I think every dog is
different so I can't "blame" the vet for her getting sick. Good luck!!

I read everyones post here. I was a vet tech for about 5 1/2 yrs, before I picked up grooming. I can say this 9 times out of 10 your pup or adult dog will have no reaction due to a vacination. There is no other way around it. I know you have your fear of a reaction. Talking to your vet and asking questions is good. Bottom line is......they need these vacines.
Parvo and Rabies and the others are a far worse fear. They kill!
Please remember that and I do hope all goes well. The Maltese breed especially is subseptable to things that normally wouldn't bother another breed. Trust your vet! See how much he knows about this breed and any problems he should look for. Good luck and Congrats. on the new furbabies.

Lucie, I was suprised that the vet gave all shots at once. My vet said we would wait on the rabies and even with that Boris did have a reaction. Of course he will get a rabies shot, but I have to wonder how he possibly can getrabies where i live, unless he got it from a roach. Live in New york City. Glad the pup is up and going with all vaccines. Good luck

Hi Vita, My little maltese had a reaction to her shots also, so my vet gives her infant tylenol right after she gives the shot and then for me to give it to her two hours after the her shots and every three hours thereafter until bed time. It has helped alot. I have two maltese puppies they were both around eight weeks old when she told me to start this. One is now four months old and she is still taking the same dosage (2ml/two very small drops)but please discuss this with your veterinarian so that he/she can recommend the dosage for you puppy.

Malteze, mom, thanks for the suggestion. I will discuss that with the vet. Seems reasonable if the puppy can come through the day o the shot is given in a more comfortable way. We certainly give tylenol to babies when they get innoculations so why not pets? Thanks for the posting
