Maltese and Allergies
by Kate
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
I have heard that Maltese have human quality hair which limits their dander production making them suitable pets for people with allergies. Is this true?

DISCUSSION:

One reason we did buy a maltese was because we had heard that they were good dogs for people with allergies. Well Boris is adorable and not causing any allergic reaction with my husband and my daughter. My daughter, who is 27, a doctor, and married, loved our lab retreiver from a far for the wonderful 12 years he was with us. She keeps coming over to hold Boris, she simply can't get over the fact that he doesn't aggravate her allergies, respritory or skin contact AT ALL. She keeps walking around the house with him with a grin, saying mommy I can hold him.So I guess everyone is different but from a kid who grew up with the kick name "sneezy" this recommendation can be believed. Go for it.

Do Malteese dogs shed their hair?
Brian
No, Brian. Maltese are non shedding. If one does not want the long, flowing coat, regular haircuts are necessary.

Hi guys-I just wanted to say that I have heard some people swear that there is no "hypoallergenic" dog, but Bijou is the first dog I can hold without sneezing, watery eyes, etc. We have a yellow lab, too, and if I even get near her I get welts on my hands. What an awful way to live if you love dogs, but what a wonerful thing to be able to get a Maltese who you can snuggle with. By the way-someone else told me that the "hypoallergenic" period may only last while they're puppies-not true, for me. Bijou is now 1 1/2 yrs and we cuddle all the time :)
