Grooming differently
by D.
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Does anybody out there keep their Malt in something other than long hair or a puppy cut? eg. we keep ours in a very short coat (using clippers every two weeks), with only the feet, ears and only the tip of the tail fluffy (makes it look like a lions tail!). The hair on his face is very short, so his face appears triangular with those fluffy ears...

DISCUSSION:

This sounds like how our step-maltese Rocky is kept cut. Except his mommy keeps his face hair long rather than short. I think she only takes him to get groomed every 6-8 Weeks though.

D., I don't feel this is a suitable cut for a Maltese. I think a Maltese should look like one. There is a similar cut that I believe would be much more appealing that some Maltese lovers use. I keep my Noah's hair 3 to 4" long and then cut him down in the summer. The hair on the body and the neck is cut very short. The legs are usually done with scissors to about 2-3 inches long all the way up. I leave the ears and tail long although the ears can be cut shorter. A "pouf" with bangs is cut for the head. The face is cut short except leaving a moustache. This is a darling cut and easy to keep. It's called the "Maltese Shortcut". Perhaps you would like to give it a try.

D. I have had my puppies cut in the "maltese shortcut" that April described. It was very very cute. One thing I would like to say is that your dogs hair should be cut in a way that fits his/her lifestyle and that pleases you. If having your dog very short is appropriate for your climate and the dogs activity then it certainly is "acceptable." You might try looking at dog magazines to find a cut you would like to try!
