Change in food
by Jim & Bob
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Prior to having our wonderful Maltese pooch, we had a poodle. Four pound Ravel was a champ, and lived to be 19 years old. We always fed him Nature's Recipe food. Our first food for our new Maltese inadvertantly was Science Diet. We prodded him, and hand fed him, but he ate. I admit I was delerious with the new pup, and thought I was buying Nature's Recipe...(Hello!!!! What planet was I on?) At any rate, upon the fact that he needed more food, we went to get Nature's Recipe puppy food, and found that the company has produced a type of food based on the type of dog. So, naturally, the "Toy" caategory suits Poulenc best. My question is, does it seem odd that there is no difference between puppy and adult food? He wolfs down the food as soon as we put it down...completely dry...Frankly, I like this...Comments?

DISCUSSION:

Hi Jim and Bob. I was perplexed also by the fact that there was no Toy Breed puppy food. Nature's Recipe for Puppies, a lamb and rice diet, is higher in crude protein, crude fat and crude fiber than Nature's Recipe for Toy Breeds, a chicken and rice diet. You can get all the details at www.naturesrecipe.com. Grace was being fed Nature's Recipe for Toy Breeds when I brought her home (at 10 1/2 wks). I was happy that it was an all natural food but was concerned that it might not be meeting her nutritional needs. My vet had the same concern and urged me to switch to a puppy food. I now feed her Solid Gold puppy food, an all natural lamb and rice diet (1/4 cup mixed with 1 tsp. warm water). Andy (19 mos) eats Solid Gold adult dog food. Info on this dog food can be found at www.solid-gold-inc.com. Neither dog is a finicky eater, both gobble up their food at each meal, never get human food (except blueberry pancakes on Sunday), and enjoy a few treats each day. Best of all, they do not beg at the table. Good luck with your new little one.

Hi Bob, Jim & Poulnec - I feed Bailey (5 mos) Nutro Max Puppy Lamb & Rice kibbles with boiled chicken breast, peas & carrots (chopped into little malt sized pieces) - Bailey HATED (and still hates) canned dog food - I stopped moistening his kibbles about a month ago, his puppy teath are pretty much in now, so it's safe for him to chew his kibbles dry. I also still keep nutri cal around just in case he gets finicky at one of his three meals! Good luck!

For Mary & Bailey - I feed Lamb & Rice puppy food dry to Bella ( months and Baxter 15 months or small gourmet Pedigree dog food to them both in the morning. Generally I cook for their dinner either they have what we are eating meat and veg only or if we are having something like pasta I cook liver for them. I had a maltese for 13 years and found her teeth when they fell out and I have 15 month Bichon and I found his teeth but Bella is 9 months and I havent seen any teeth - she is just 3 pounds and very smal mouth and teeth like a kitten's (lucky for Baxter) as she does bite his paws and ears. Are these her real teeth or will they fall out - I would ask the vet but she hasnt been to her since last shots. When do baby teeth fall out or did I miss them??? Thanks
Shirley
