Large Maltese
by Chantal
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Hi, I am fairly new to this site and thouroughly enjoy it! I have a 2 year old Maltese named Max and he weighs 14 lbs. We keep him in a puppy cut and he is absolutely adorable. I was looking through the photo album and saw a picture from J. Barret of his two dogs Misty and Simon Is that 39lb dog really a Maltese? If so, I want one ! I would love to get a bigger dog, but I wouldn't get anything other than a Maltese. I bought my Maltese from a breeder here in Quebec (Canada) and he was the biggest of the bunch. Noone wanted him :-( but we love him to death.

DISCUSSION:

Hi. I am also new to this group and absolutely love this site. My Maltese is also a big boy. He was 1 yr old Dec. 22 and weighs close to 14 lbs. I like the fact that he is a little bit big because I feel like he is not so fragile. I used to have a 3 lb. Yorkie and although he was a pretty tough guy, you had to be careful with him. I couldn't be happier with my Maltese (Nevar). He is a happy, healthy, outgoing dog. He loves children and is always good natured and very calm.

wow. Is that 39-lb dog a Maltese???

Hi Chantal & Barbara. It seems when it comes to Maltese, many people feel the smaller, the better. It is refreshing to see a different outlook on this. It breaks my heart to think a Maltese can end up unwanted all because he/she turned out bigger than the "breed standard". A few years ago I was at a local dog show. I met a nice couple who were showing their Maltese in obedience. They got this dog because the people who had her before decided they didn't want her anymore just because she was too big! And if I remember correctly, she only weighed 8 lbs! Can you imagine! It is one thing to have certain criteria in mind when picking out a puppy but how can you stop loving a dog just because it isn't physically exactly what you expected?

A 39 lb. Maltese - I have never... and he's cute as could be! WOW! How does that happen?? Do they grow 'em that way in Kansas? ha!

Is it really possible? Where did they get that dog? The biggest maltese I had ever heard of was a little over 20 lbs. I AM AMAZED!!!
JP
WOW! Do you believe that Simon? 39 lbs!!! How can that happen? Doesnt he just look so cuddly tho :))) Mine look like English Sheep Dogs when they pull each others topknots out.... imagine what he looks like? What a sweetie he must be!!!

Chantal, I just had to go check out the photos to get a look at this 35 pound Maltese- dont believe he weighs 35 pounds - I thought perhaps it was a typo & should have been 3.5 but when I looked I knew it wasnt 3.5 dog. I had a Maltese named ChiChi & when my husband was alive he spoiled her rotten eventually she weighed 17lbs- when my husband died in November '93 that's what she weighed by July she was back to 12 pounds then 11 which was ideal for her bone structure. I now have 13 pound Bichon & 3lb Maltese. By the way where in Quebec did you get your Maltese - my sisters both would love a Maltese & live on south shore of Montreal.

Whoa, I just checked out that picture of Misty and Simon. It's like looking at Chewbacca next to R2D2! He looks so cute though. I bet you could have a lot of fun tussling with him!!
Anne
Shirley .... oh my gosh, what a small world ! I live on the South Shore of Montreal also!!! I bought Max from a breeder on the South Shore (in a town called St. Basile)
Chantal
WOW!! I just want to hug & kiss that big guy!!! Imagine giving him a bath - LOL!!!

Sandee:I'd like to echo your sentiments, especially the part "It is refreshing to see a different outlook on this. It breaks my heart to think a Maltese can end up unwanted all because he/she turned out bigger than the "breed standard"." Our Poquito is 14 lbs also and we love him just fine. I personally don't care to be associated with the sort of people that discard these dogs the are bigger than the standard. They themselves, need to be discarded.
Rick
I would love to have a larger (39 lbs. okay) Maltese! Where do you find a breeder who has them?

Chantal, my sisters are in Greenfield Park and Brossard (P) section. I will be visiting with my Bichon and Maltese in August for my son's wedding August 7th - they loved my ChiChi so will surely go nuts when they see Baxter and my little Bella - lucky she lost her cat. ChiChi used to terrorize the cat and in return the cat wouldnt let me use the bathroom and hissed at me. One time my sister wanted to keep ChiChi and since my nephew was acting up at the time (I think her was 7) I said fine you keep ChiChi for a few months and Kyle can come home with me in the kennel - he thought we were serious. I have reputation for being deciplinarian so he didnt want to come.LOL

Chantal - it's so refreshing to read all this. Kiwi is usually 12 or 13 lbs., but she is overweight. 10 lbs. would be about right. I'm more comfortable with the larger size, because she is not quite as fragile. I'd be afraid to have a 3 pounder sleeping in our bed. I am going to look at the pix of Misty and Simon. I have neverheard of one that big.

Cool!! My Maltese, 5 month old male, weighs 5 lbs... I love him the way he is, but I still would like for him to be one of the "big boys." ;) I have always really liked big dogs, and I plan on getting a Great Pyrenees "for my Maltese" one day! LOL!

What a beautiful dog that big boy is! Serious cuddles could be had with that baby! Yes, most people want the small babies( some even request 3 pounds and under ) and they are shocked when they see my beautiful Cassidy ,an 8 pound baby with a glorious coat and the sweetest disposition. I actually thought she was small until I got Peewee, my 4 pound stud muffin. Their daughter Bridget weighs a whopping 4 and a half pounds. Her recent litter, 3 beautiful girls, are going to be very small. I love them all, whether they are tiny or bigger size. I have a very sad story about tiny maltese to relate to all of you. Last summer a friend adopted a beautiful girl furbaby, Bridget's daughter (spittin image of her mom) and she loved that baby so much. She took such good care of the baby, and I was pleased to find such a special new mother for my grandbaby. This friend showed up at my door 2 months later but she was emptyhanded. She told of the tragic accident in her home just hours earlier. Mitsie (this is what she named her beloved furbaby) was dead. The saddest part was that she had stepped on Mitsie because she did not realize the tiny baby was under her foot. Mitsie died in her arms, she buried her in an angel box she had. She and I cried for an hour together. I loved that baby and had considered keeping her myself, but this friend was such a perfect choice to adopt my grandbaby. Because she was so small, Mitsie had no chance once she was stepped on. We shuffle our feet now-I would rather accidentally kick a furbaby than step on one. I didn't mean to ramble, but I feel people need to realize how fragile the tiny malts are. Susan...
