DISCUSSION:
There is a lot of information about these wonderful little dogs right here on this website. If you go to the Home Page, on the left-hand side of the screen you will find various categories, from housebreaking, to a description of the breed standard, and also a photo album. First of all, do NOT purchase your dog from a pet shop. Don't even go in there to look! This website also has a section on why not to buy from a petshop that is very enlightening. You're wise to ask a lot of questions about the breed before you make a committment. I think that you will find these little guys are wonderful companions. Not only are they very intelligent, they have delightful personalities and make perfect house dogs. They may be small, but don't let their size fool you... they are sturdy little dogs with tons of energy. Mine loves to go for walks, rides in the car, and will play hard. But they are just as happy to sit in your lap and watch TV.
You asked about what to look for in a Maltese. You didn't mention if you were looking for a pet, or a show dog, so I don't know how to answer that question. I don't show, but many people here do, and could help you there. If you're looking for a pet/companion, I would say to look first for a healthy, happy puppy. My first Maltese had lemon ears, but was a wonderful dog, and I couldn't have cared less that she wasn't 100% snow white. The little guy I have now has a bit of lemon, but again, he is a wonderful dog and means more to me than anything. He's healthy, smart, and I was lucky to have found a wonderful maltese breeder right here in town.
You might look for some books on Maltese at your bookstore also. There is also an American Maltese Breeders Association that has a breeder referral list that you can write for, but I am not sure how to reach them.... perhaps there is a website? Also, there might be a dog show in your area. I think you will find that Maltese are amazing little dogs that will steal your heart forever. I cannot imagine ever having any other kind of dog. Good luck with your puppy search, and keep us posted!
If you take the time to study what is written, the pictures, and the questions posted on this forum you will become a well informed candidate as Maltese people. I've had dogs all my life, never has any breed been so sweet and wonderful as my Maltese and I truly believe that this wonderful relationship was worth the long wait.Good luck!
DO NOT buy from a pet store! KNOW the breeder; visit the premises; interview them; see the sire and dam; check their reputation; check their agreement and past history, etc.
Maltese are truly a unique toy breed. Your life will be forever enriched! Good luck in your search :)

Please - please, PLEASE - take your time, read everything that this site has to offer and keep asking questions. The Maltese is a wonderful breed and there truly is a lot to learn, but every minute you spend in studying and consideration will be rewarded tenfold when you bring home your Maltese. I read every book I could get my hands on, talked to many breeders, and can assure you that this site is the very best source of information on Maltese - not only on the web, but anywhere - period. Starting on the homepage, taking every subject listed on the left hand side of the screen and read every syllable.

Chris & Kelley, you are about to embark on the most loving relationship of your life! Having a Malt is a lifelong commitment - you are wise to do all the research first. Read everything on this site, learn the Maltese standard, understand especially the part of training 'cuddle not coddle' (not an easy thing to do with these furbabies, and, as suggested, research the library for videos & books on the breed.

I am looking to purchase a "show quality" maltese...I live in Florida. Any suggestions? Recommendations? I would like a puppy...but I'm flexible and would be willing to consider a young dog.
