Are Beanies Really OK?
by Amanda
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
I have a 13-week old malt of whom I think would really enjoy playing with beanie babies. I hesitating because I wonder what would happen if he ripped it open and ate whatever's inside. Has anyone had this problem? Or is it edible? Or should I let him play with them only under supervision? Thanks!

DISCUSSION:

I'm afraid to let Buster play with a beanie. I got him a platypus through a pet catalog and it's his favorite stuffed toy, also very durable. I'm very pleased...so is he.

Amanda, believe it or not I do not own a Beenie Baby. Now if they come out with a Maltese Beenie you can bet I'll have on of those. As far as giving one to my Buster who is almost 2yrs old, no. Buster is a chewer/shredder. Any stuffed toys he gets is torn up within minutes. So I wouldn't dare give him a beenie baby.

Yes, your puppy should be supervised when playing with a Beanie Baby. It should be one that does not have small parts that can be easily pulled off. If a hole or rip appears, it is time to take it away and either sew it up or dispose of it. Mine loves Beanie Babies, too. He had a squirrel that I finally had to take away because of a rip in the seam.

I don't think that Beanie babies are very safe for dogs. The plastic eyes could come out easily. Also, the legs could rip open very easily, and they are stuffed with plastic pellets. Who knows what those pellets would do to their stomachs! I think it might be a lot safer to let him play with toys that are specifically designed for doggy destruction.

HI, we have about every stuffed doggy toy there is. I don't think a beanie baby would be safe for our babies. We have what we call "Pet Cemetery", we never have a problem with toy rotation because they end up in pet cemetery long befor they get bored with them and it takes me for ever to sew them and get them back to the babies. Eddie LOVES Beanie Babies. He has three of his own (and takes my daughters if he gets a chance). But Eddie is not a shredder. He will bring one over, want you to throw it, he chases it and brings it back. He can do this for hours. And when the game is over it goes back in his toy box. But I am with him when he plays with them. If he starts to rip them apart, no more beanie babies. Good Luck!

My rule of thumb is that if it can be chewed up - no way, if it can be swallowed - no way,. Would I allow an infant to play with it? As tiny as my Phoebe is she is a voracious chewer and has learned that some things are simply off limits. No Beanie Babies here, but I do collect teddy bears and she knows that they are a "no no".

NO DO NOT LET THEM PLAY WITH BEANIES I had a friend almost lost her little on because he ate the pvc pellets that fell out of a beanie. I would not even let mine play with one with me not taking my eyes off her.

Hi Amanda, I do collect Beanies and my Bailey got her little paws on one (Red Dog) and ate the tag off which a collector knows its then worth nothing and even then I still didn't give it to her to play with. She just loves them and always tries to get one so I had to place them up high enough so that she couldn't. She just loves to pull things apart and I don't think they are strong enough - way too dangerous IMHO.
