Summer cut, Puppy cut???
by Debbi
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Since it has been so warm lately, my poor furbaby is sweating terribly. So I think i will get her a shorter hair-do. My problem is that last time I went to the groomer and asked for a puppy cut, they gave her back shaved to the skin! This is DEFINATLY not what I had in mind! What I picture is what they looked like as puppies, kind of long and fluffy. It would probly be about 2(?) inches long. Does anyone know how I can tell my groomer that this is what I want? Or does anyone have a pic of their furbaby in a cut kind of like this? Thank you!

DISCUSSION:

We all have our Maltese {7 of us}cut in baby cuts. Usally, 1\2 in. to 1 in. seems to be the norm. But just tell your groomer, what you want. I like the face, chin left longer, then some, also. He looks adorable, that way. Once they cut his face, neck, and chin way back, and he looked like a poodle. It grew back real fast, thank goodness. Write a list. of what you don't want, listed before, what you do want. None of us would ever go back to the long hair. They gust look so cute.

Hi, If you want to know where to find a picture look in the Maltese Only home page click on the photo album and just pick the picture you want. Bill & Pearl

Debbie, I've tried a groomer and was very unpleased. I do it myself using a Robo Cut. You set it for the desired length ( 2" inches in my case) and cut away. It takes about 10 minutes. The last time I cut her about 1.5 inchers on the head and underneath. She looks adorable and I am very picky with my puppy. Sunny

For starters, dogs don't perspire :) Malts' silky hair helps keep them cool and helps guard against sunburn. The suggestion to take a photo to the groomer is an excellent one. You can be specific on a list too, e.g., do not cut eye lashes; do not cut tail hair; etc. I have seen people cry when they picked up their puppy from the groomer, too many of us have been there. :) I had a dog that acted embarrassed after being clipped & would try to hide! LOL The good thing is that it grows fast!

It took us a while to find a groomer who knew how to "clip" a Maltese correctly. Poor Cotton had come home so many times looking horrible that I finally got to the point where I was calling groomers and asking up front if they had ever clipped a Maltese before and knew what the term puppy cut meant. We finally found one who said she did, but just to be sure I took in a picture for her to go by. She has been clipping Cotton for 4 years now and she does a wonderful job. We have a summer cut (where he is taken down fairly close) and a winter cut which is a little longer than the puppy cut.

Sunny, What is a robo cut, Are they clippers, or what? I agree, that groomers don't always, please us mommys, but I do it, to help him, get use to other people and dogs.more then anything else. Every other month I do him, myself. But no matter how bad we think they look, other people think thet are adorable. Please, let us know, what it is you use, Sunny

Thank oyu huys for all the great suggestions! i think I will judt bring a picture and tell my groomer exactly what I want. If she still doesnt get it right, I might try it myself :). Oh yeah, I didn't mean she "sweated" literaly! I just meant that she seemed kind of hot with her long hair. Thanks again

Joanne, the RoboCut is a device that attaches to the vacuum cleaner. It cost $69.00 if I remember correctly. There is a more expensive one with the vacuum built in. I would have invested in that one had I known it would work so well. I will try to get Maggie's picture in the photo album soon so you can see how extremely cute she is. If she was any cuter, I don't think I could stand it. If you are interested, the number for the RoBo Cut is 1-800-825-0139. Sunny

Sunny, I'm sure their are alot of people wondering about this ROBO. Does it work better then clippers or scizzers?? Sounds good. Do you know if any groomers ,use it?
Joanne
Joanne, you use an attachment that gives you the desired length, in my case 2 inches. As I said earlier, it is attached to the vacuum cleaner and sucks the hair up into the Robo Cut which cuts it off at the chosen length. Last time I cut Maggie a little shorter, 1.5 inches, around her neck and head and was very pleased with the outcome. There is another device similar to the Robo Cut called the FlowBee. It is my understanding that it doesn't work as well. I have been very happy with this product. I really had a bad experience with a groomer in this area, and this has provided us with the perfect puppy cut. Sunny

I love the puppy cut and the same thing happened to Moxy - too short. I now do it myself using a 1/2 inch guide on oster trimmers but I must say, it has taken many cuts to finally feel confident. It still usually takes a copuple of days to get the fur even. (You keep seeing bits stick out). Good luck.

Sunny, Does it cut more even , and did you have any trouble with the noise from vac.? My dog would be afraid, at first, anyways.??????
