Puppy hip displacement
by Amanda
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
My name is Amanda and I am writing from Australia. I am a first time maltese owner, he was a Christmas present. Max is only five months old and I have just been told by our vet that he has a hip displacement. I was after some information to assist me with my options. If anyone has any advice I would be very grateful. I love him so much and just want to make him better. Thank-you.

DISCUSSION:

Amanda, did they take an x-ray to determine this? Sometimes with a small dog they don't need any treatment except maybe a baby asprin. What treatments did they recomend? I think he is awful young for surgery. Good Luck, let us know what happens.

I had my physiotherpaist and chiro ckeck my puppy for a displaced rib and they suggested manual therapy. I gently push on the vertebra and rib joint repetively about once a week. My vet is training in alernative medicine for dogs and he feels that chiropractic may play a role in hip and back problems in dogs.

Yes, My little Maxi, was x-rayed because he was not putting any pressure on his leg. It was the x-rays that shows he had a hip displacement there were also other "lines" on the x-ray but the vet could not determine what they were. He has now being given a drug called Cartrophen, which he is injected with weekly. He is still in pain though and can't walk. Thank-you for your suggestions I would love to hear more.

I know absolutely nothing about this. Is it anything Chondroitin and Glucosamine could help? Do hope your baby gets better soon.

Is hip displacement the same as a luxating patella? If so, I had a very small poodle (3 lbs) that had that. I had surgery done, and he was running on the leg in a month or so.. I am just curious, is this the same thing?
