Tear Staining
by Little Bit's Mom
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Tear Staining: Hello I have a beautiful baby girl named Little Bit, I got her when she was 10 weeks old, she had no tear stains at all. About 1 month later the staining starting of course I have read and ask and done everything known to mankind with not much luck. She is now 11months old today I took her to the vet and asked if possible her ducts where clogged and he kinda said everyone thinks their dog ducts are clogged because it is a known fact the white hair dogs tend to stain. He said he could tell me within 2 minutes if they where or not. I said please do. He put a small amount of color solution in her eyes and waited 2 minutes then cut off the light and shined a black light?? up her nose, he said there should be a sign of the bright solution, nothing was there, but her face was glowing from the stuff, he then waited 5 minutes and said he should see it in her nose and mouth but we seen nothing. We are doing the procedure for the unclogging, next week, she is has completely clogged ducts. All this time I have been buying all the products and it really couldnt help too much. If this doesnt work then it would be unfixable and we can live with it. But wish us luck next Wednesday. Sorry this was so long just thought people should know the doctor can tell you quickly if the ducts are clogged.

DISCUSSION:

your post was interesting, please let us know how the dog did. I am considering the same procedure, and did not realise thats how they could tell. my dog does not have a major stain because I clean dilligently every day but she does tear a lot. thanks

I had the same procedure done on Alex. It helps a little but does not get rid of the problem. The vet told me that on those small dogs the ducts are so small that the tears don't drain through it because the gravity pressure is not strong enough. When they flush the tear ducts they use pressure and whatever liquid they use to do it goes through the ducts just fine. But the dogs tears have to go through the ducts by gravity only.

That is interesting. I was thinking my little Sara has a similar problem. She has very bad staining. I also notice that her eyes "well up" alot, as if they werent draining properly. Please keep us posted, and good luck.

I'm also interested in hearing people's experience with this. Spunky's ducts were flushed a couple weeks ago at the same time he had dental work. They said some "stuff" came out but they were not infected. I think there has been a little less tearing but the problem has not disappeared. The vet had also given me a supply of a very mild medicated ointment (antibiotic plus cortisone I think) which seemed to help reduce the teariness and which we are supposed to use again if needed. But would the ointment then block the tear ducts?

Both my puppies had their tear ducts flushed. It helped the staining with one but not the other! It seems the best way to deal with it is to wipe with warm water on a cloth, often, but be sure to DRY the area! Its mostly the moisture that causes the stain!!! There are, of course, several remedies to bleach the remaining stains as it grows out.

Thanks for your help. Will talk to my vet. What are some of the solutions for bleaching the tearstain out. I don't want to use anything that would hurt Buffy.
