wearing a collar
by JILL
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
HI! I have a sweet little 6 month old named Willie. I have off and on tried to get him to wear a little nylon collar almost from the day I got him, but every time I put it on him he goes crazy at first, and then his whole personality changes! He hides, he hardly plays at all, no interest even in his doggy treats! I just had him neutered the other day, and put the collar back on the next day. The surgery is healing fine, but he's almost lithargic. In the past, I've always given in, and taken the collar off, but the vet said leave it on, and he'll get use to it! We're on day three, and I'm almost ready to give in again, so I can get my playful pup back. Help! Has anyone else had this problem? Thanks in advance, Willie's Mom
DISCUSSION:
Hi Guys, Pearlita dosen't like her collar. So I bought the
smallest harness that I could find. It was a little too big
but worked better than a collar. When we are home I remove the
harness. When she sees me with the harness she will get excited
because she knows she is going for a ride. Pearl dosen't like to
have her harness on at home and will just lay around if it is on.
I am always amazed how much alike our babies are. Bill & Pearl

I agree with the vet. He will get used to it. If he just had surgery, his behavior may be partly related to that. Some do not use collars but mine always wears one with a nametag in case he gets lost. The nylon collars are great because they don't damage the coat. However, when walking your baby, I think the harness is best. I use a nylon harness for walking.

I agree with April. It takes a while for puppy to get used to it. Both of my girls have collars with their nametag in case they need to be identified. But I use adjustable step-in harness I recently bought when we go on walks. Have a great day!

Hi Jill, my 3 month old Kikki also hates her collar. It took about 2 days to get her used to the harness, but I do take the harness off as soon as we get home. Yesterday my husband sugested that we use a collar with a bell so we can hear where kikki is.(we also attached her nametag to it incase god forbid she'll get lost)well kikki is acting very strange since yesterday, she will not play with anyone she keeps rubbing her neck on the floor or carpet and try to get it off her neck.she lays in her bed and ignores us almost like she is mad at me. I took her collar off just before I started to write this message to you, but I do not know if I did the right thing. If you hear any good advise please let me know, thank you.

Jill, how do you take Willie for a walk? Many pups dont like the collar at first but they simply have to get used to it! You are the alpha - associate Willie's wearing it with a fun time, like going for a walk. Sounds like training classes are due where he'll have to have a leash. Remember, apart from cuddling and loving, the best things we can do for our furbabies is to make sure they understand who is boss! And, its NOT THEM! LOL
