water bottle or dish?
by puppy owner-to-be
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
I was wondering if I should get a bottle or dish for my new puppy. I pick him up in a week from the breeder's :) I left a baby blanket with him so his littermate's and mother's scent would be on it when I get him home (so he won't feel so alone). Anyways, I have heard from some that a bowl of water will stain the fur (I plan to keep it long) and a bottle will eliminate this, but I have also heard that he won't get enough water from the bottle. Any suggestions?

DISCUSSION:

I have 14 week old, boris who was used to drinking from a water bottle and i got one he uses it and likes it also put down a bown of water, a tiny one, it is china he likes that too water bottle better for keeping that chin dry if they are thirsty they drink , no matter which. I often just remind him the water is there, especially if we have been playing hard.

I prefer the water bottle for a couple reasons. The puppy wont tip it over and make a mess and you can be sure that the water is staying fresh and clean. Keeps their hair from getting all wet, too. And a glass bottle is better than a plasic one.

Congratulations on your new baby! Yes, water can stain the hair (Malts dont have fur) :) but you can wipe his little beard after he drinks. When mine were really tiny, I bought minute custard cups for their water and a bottle. They have to learn to get water from a bottle. Ceramic or stainless dishes, really tiny ones, and a glass bottle not plastic. Also, we use filtered or bottled water. Leaving a blanket there is a good idea; hope the little ones dont pee on it! LOL That will make it more difficult to crate train if you plan to put the blanket in his crate :) Good luck with your new love :)

I use the water bottle for Phoebe and it's wonderful! No wet chin, no soggy feet as a pup, no food dropped in the water, and traveling is a breeze with a bottle! I also use bottled water, not sure if it really helps with the tear staining but it helps me to know she always has the same water and her system is not upset. Good luck with your new baby.

Please tell me what you mean by a water bottle? Is it one of those sport bottles? Karen M

Karen, you can see water bottles in pet stores. They attach to a wire cage or can be wall mounted, some people have found a stand for them. Look in the section for rabbits & guinea pigs :) Dont be discouraged if it drips at first, new bottles tend to do that or if the water is cold. We always give water closer to room temperature rather than cold. I use a small sports bottle when we go to the park or in the car.

I discovered that a regular short, wide glass is the best for their water! Every time Ahzsie would steal my water (I sit on the floor a lot, and he would "ruin" my water) I noticed that he didn't get all wet like when I had a small bowl next to his food. So I changed to putting a glass down for him, and now I don't worry about having to wipe him off so his hair won't discolor. He seems to like it better too.

Hello, I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to disagree with BeeGee. Please consider getting a bottle that is specifically made for dogs-not rodents. Often, the ball that regulates the water is different, as well as the diameter of the spout, the volume it can hold, and the material content of the bottle (glass is better than plastic). The rodent watering bottles will work-but a dog one is much better-they will take to it faster and be able to get more water quicker if it is made for dogs. If you cannot find it in your pet store-many mail order catalogs carry the dog waterers. good luck with your new little one!

Thank you, everyone, for all your help!!! I got my furbaby yesterday, and he has a water bottle. I couldn't find a glass one, but the plastic one made for dogs works great. I'm trying to teach him how to use it (starting with a cup of water under the nozzle and letting the water evaporate until he uses the bottle). He's starting to get the idea. Thanks!

I have read on other lists that a water bottle should *not* be the only source for water. Expert show people have written that dogs have suffered medical illnesses due to not getting enough water from the bottles. It is said they should be used in conjuntion with water dishes and not as the only source. This is what I have read and why take a chance simply because of convenience.
