Won't eat her food
by Kathy
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Recently my husband had three weeks off from work and needless to say Snowball enjoyed every minute of it. Rolf spoiled her the entire time by giving her everything he ate. While this may seem like a nice thing to do he didn't realize that he was doing her more harm than good. He grew up around great big dogs so he's accustomed to the appetites of these dogs. I nearly lost it when I came home early one day to find Snowball gnawing at a big beef bone that he decided to get her when he went shopping. I immediately took it from her for fear she would choke. She didn't like this idea and growled as I took it from her. I proceeded to growl and snarl at my husband as I lectured him about the dangers of bones. Anyway, I'm not sure just what he was giving her during the day (besides the bone episode) but now she is refusing to eat her dog food and goes absolutely wild when she sees him eating. How can I break her out of this habit? I don't want her to get sick from lack of food but I know she can't continue to keep eating our food - there's just not enough nutrition and vitamins in it for her. Please tell me what to do, I feel like a bad mommy for not giving in to her. I'm afraid she's going to hate me and just love my husband for supplying her with all these goodies.....

DISCUSSION:

Kathy,Have you tried mixing her kibble with Gerbers chicken and gravy, a number 2 baby food? My little one was not eating well and my breeder told me to try this and it worked! Also, I give my Romy a chicken stick, also Gerbers, as a snack once or twice a day. Good luck.Sheila

Yep, I think you got a real problem there. Refer to the movie, As Good as It Gets, to see how a little dog can get spoiled in a serious way. Seriously though, go back to the dog's normal diet and add in a little "human food" chicken or meat just to get things back on track

Hi Kathy, I've been through something similar to this before and the only way around it is to just leave her food out and have your husband ignore her when she comes by him while he is eating. She won't refuse to eat for too long-eventually she will figure it out that your husband won't respond to her anymore and she'll have no choice except to start eating her own food again. You could also start to cook for her. I leave dry food out all day and I cook lunch and dinner for my girls. They are getting all the nutrition they need this way as I got a lot of the recipes from this site and from other sources on the web. Good luck-and please don't feel like your being a bad mommie because you are not at all. Things will work out-you'll see:-)) Take care:)

Beef bones are o.k. to give ! I usually get the butcher to cut them in 1/2 inch pieces, boil them with garlic & rice which I drain of fat then mix in with their food and the bones are for treats, leave the marrow in them this will keep'm occupied for awhile [ ggg ]
