Scaling disorder
by Trish & Heidi
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
We just got the results of Heidi's biopsy - she has a scaling disorder called Sebaceous Adenitis. It is genetic and is considered to be only cosmetic (what a relief.) We took her to the vet because her skin was so dry and flaky and her fur was beginning to get dull. They took blood tests and ruled out thyroid, liver and other possibilities. Now that we have the diagnosis, the vet is suggesting a conservative, natural approach. Heidi is on dermacaps and Evening Primrose capsules. I have to get a shampoo called Sebalyte (sp?) and a cream rinse called Hy-lyte. I can't bathe her until her stitches come out (from the biopsy.) She has been such a little trooper through this. Everyone at the dermatologist's office fell in love with her. Anyway, does anyone know anything about this? The vet said that her paw chewing might also be caused by this. If anyone has any information, I'd love to hear it.

DISCUSSION:

We are very glad to hear that Heidi will be OK. Oh, how us mothers worry! I'm going to be going through the same thing with Jazz. He pulls the fur from the tops of his feet and breaks out in a rash on his stomach. How many stitches did Heidi get? Did the dermatologist do any skin tests? How long did Heidi need to stay at the dermatologist? I call tomorrow to set up Jazz's appointment. Thanks Trish!
Lynn & Jazz

Hi Lynn, Thanks for the good words. To answer your questions, Heidi got a "punch biopsy" and only has 2 stitches. The dermatolotist did skin tests (I think for parasites.) Heidi only had to stay at the vet for 2 hours so we stayed and waited. They gave her iv valium so she didn't have to be anesthetised (sp?). Good luck with Jazz, keep us posted.

Trish, this is very interesting. My Noah had some itching, chewing, and licking of the paws, and a coat that would tangle and mat at the drop of a hat. The texture of his coat had changed. For a long time, I thought it was his shampoo or perhaps that he had an allergy. He eats the Eukanuba lamb & rice. The lamb & rice has less fat then some of the other foods. I had to switch because of digestive problems. My vet and I finally figured out that he was not getting enough fat. I began bathing with a hypoallergenic oatmeal shampoo and conditioner. I still use a whitening shampoo monthly with no problem. The vet also put Noah on the Derm-Caps liquid. This combination has worked wonders. He no longer has any itching, has quit licking his paws, and has a gorgeous, silky coat that tangles a lot less than before. It took a few weeks of being on the Derm-Caps but it has worked wonders. I hope your baby gets better, soon.
