Not Crate Trainable?
by Karen
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
My new puppy (4 months old) seems to be absolutely resistant to potty training. She stays in her bed (bottom half of vari-kennel) with her toys 95% of the time and likes to pee and poop in there too. She has no qualms about sleeping with the poop.
Two nights in a row now she peed on her teddy bear's head (I know it sounds funny, but I'm not laughing). I have been diligent about watching her for signs of needing to potty and
put her on the paper every time. There has not been even ONE incident that I haven't caught her in and corrected her. Last nite I put her on her paper and gave the "go potty" command. I knew she had to go, had been 7 hours since she last peed. Suddenly she CHARGED off the paper and into her bed and squatted down on the teddy bear and peed. I caught her, immediately reprimanded her and put her back on the papers. She stood on the papers staring at me like I was an alien from Mars for 25 minutes. The only thing I could think to do is to take her nice soft towels and blankets out of her bed and put newspapers in instead until she gets the hint. I did this today thinking I'd start her getting used to doing it on paper in the kennel bottom. It didn't work. She opted to pee and poop on her blanket which I transferred out of the kennel. BTW, yes, I wash everything everytime she pees or poops. This isn't a matter of puppy bowel & bladder control or a matter of her not knowing she's supposed to go SOMEWHERE... she doesn't pee on the carpet or the floor... mostly just her bed/vari-kennel bottom. As I said, she was on the papers and left to seek out the bed to pee on. She won't eat anywhere except in her bed either. If you have had this problem please advise on how you corrected it. Also, if you have suggestions PLEASE respond. Thank you!
DISCUSSION:
I am no expert, but let me throw out an idea. Perhaps what you need to do is stay with her, no matter how long it takes, until she goes on the paper. Then go wild and give her a treat. Totally ignore when she has accidents, don't reprimand at all. Just give loads of positive reinforcement (including a treat) when she does it right. Also, throw out her bedding and current vari-kennel and replace with all new. No matter how much you wash, you might not be totally eliminating the smell. Keep her on leash and tethered to you until she is housebroken. It should work, but it will take time. Just remember -- lots of treats and postive reinforcement, no reprimands. Good luck.

Sorry to hear about your trouble with your puppy..You didnt say where you got your puppy but its behaviour sounds very like what you might expect from a pet store puppy who has been never taught to eliminate anywhere but in his crate..If you got the puppy from a breeder i would certainly seek the breeders advice..if from a store you will have to start from square one and have lots and lots of patience in teaching the puppy new behaviour..good luck and let us know how you do

Hi Karen - Both Rob & Joan have given you great advise - if in fact it was from a puppy store, BELIEVE me, it is a lot harder - I ended up ditching Bailey's crate the second day home, because he thought this was where he was supposed to go. Like Joan said, ignore him when he has a mistake and sit with him for as long as it takes until he goes on the paper or wee wee pad, when Bailey first started using his pads, I went nuts - picked him up & kissed him all over and kept saying good boy!!! Now (and he's 4 and a half months now) he automatically goes on his wee wee pad (even on walks, I live in NYC, so the mayor must LOVE me, Bailey will ONLY go on a wee wee pad). Good Luck!

I agree totally with Joan. Get rid of the present crate and throw away the bedding and the teddy bear! Pehaps keeping the door to her new crate closed then open it when YOU decide its crate time! Do routine feeding then keep her close to you on leash and stay with her on the papers until she goes. Major praise and a super special treat when she does! No reprimand - just positive reinforcement! She'll get it - good luck! :)
BeeGee
Hi Guys! I got her from a VERY reputable show dog breeder and she has a VERY impressive pedigree. The breeder kept her in a "playpen" before I got her so it's possible she's just used to using her bed like a little studio apartment with bathroom, kitchen, & bedroom in one. To start correcting her I've decided only to let her use her vari-kennel bed for sleeping at night, then I take it away. If she soils her blankets in the day, I'm taking them away. At that point she'll only have the option to make mistakes on the floor (which she doesn't do) or go to her paper. I know.... I'm in for a real fun time, huh? Thank you guys for responding. Everything helps!
Karen for Rob & Mary
Hello Everyone and thanks to all for responding! The crate is put away and she now has just a little blanket and her toys. She won't be allowed in the kennel except at night from now on (unless I'm not home). Good news! She TWICE today sought out her puppy pads to poop on! I appreciate your help megatons!

Hi Karen (ditto with Rob - sorry) - anyway, try the pads, they may help - also, she's still a baby, give it time :) Good luck!!
