Linebreeding
by Susan
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
I am a breeder owner for 3 years now. I am currently researching the topic of linebreeding. I know of advantages and disadvantages of inbreeding. My real question to an experienced breeder would be the following. Father to daughter may be acceptable, but would you consider grandfather to granddaughter unacceptable and unethical?

DISCUSSION:

Just a quick comment- I thought it was the other way around. Every time I have heard of linebreeding (not much, I'm no expert) it was grandparent to grandchild not parent to child. Last I heard, breeding that close was 'out of fashion'. Anyone else want to comment?

I personally would not intentionally breed father with daughter. I have had two mis-breedings , 1. father & daughter, out came one boy, smart as anything with many faults, 2. mistake was grandson w/grandmother , I wanted to abort both until I found out the negative side effects, so I let it go, out came one little shaky girl "Princy" who now is 2 1/2 years old and spayed after she had one litter in Oct. via C-section.

Inbreeding would be father to daughter of mother to son - grandfather to grandaughter is line breeding. Inbreeding in my opinion is something best left alone, but line breeding is acceptable if the lines are free of faults of problems and meet the standards.

Susan, if you are going to try a close breeding such as a grandsire to a grandaughter you will have to do a deep pedigree research. Is the gransire already a linebred or inbred dog? Is he a product of two good out cross lines? How about the bitches in the pedigree - are they related in any way to that grandsire? Have you actually seen the Maltese in the pedigree? Just saying line or in breeding is bad or good isn't enough. Unless you have close knowledge of the dogs in the pedigree it may be better to pick a stud for your bitch that has the qualities you are looking for from a well known pedigree. This takes a lot of homework to be sure of producing the type of puppies that will make you proud. Even with carefull planning, I always have said that someone else is in charge! You never know how the genes will play out. You can't fool Mother Nature, nor the Higher Power either! A line or in breeding can be either good or bad depending on the result and on your special planning. Hope this makes sense.
