Keeping puppy safe on bed
by Susy
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Do any of you have any ideas on keeping your puppy from jumping or falling off your bed? I plan to put her crate beside me on the bed until she is potty trained, but after that, I worry about her falling off. I could put a bunk bed roll guard around it, except for where I slip in. I have a ramp (my padded slant board) that will allow her to trot up to get in. I worry too much, eh? She is extra tiny, and I don't want to take any chances. Stack cushions up like stairs around the bed? Sigh, My last baby died of a sudden illness within about five hours of onset, so I think I'm parnoid... about protect my new Kizzy baby! Signed, laying awake at night trying to outsmart any possible danger...Signed nervous, excited, expectant mommy!

DISCUSSION:

Oh boy ! First, how old is the baby ?( hope at least 12 weeks) I would introduce her to the bed during daylite hours, so that she could identify the perimeter and then definitely add some type of steps to the foot of the bed for her to go up & down on, make sure they are not slippery.( may have to nail up some carpet treads) Another thing you may want to consider is putting your bed up against a wall ( long side), one less side to worry about and add a baby gate for the bed , they make gates for the bed too, similar to hospital gates, think you can them at "kid's 'r' us" !
Ingrid

Thanks, Ingrid. I put my bed in the corner of the room, even though I am afraid a spider might get me. I'll check out the baby gates for the bed. I was hoping for something like this. My baby Kiszy (Kismet) will be 12 weeks old. She was born Dec. 4, and I was waiting for her before she even "happened"! I called my breeder in October to check if she was having any babies. My last baby (2yrs old) died five years ago, while we were on Lopez Island, no vet at the time, a call to an inland vet saying, oh, she just needed rest, she got worse, we got really worried, and then she went into shock and died at the ferry landing on a pillow in my sons arms. So, after 5 years of crying about her, and and getting back on my feet after my divorce, I now have another Baby. My Blossy's death was the hardest thing I've ever gone though! When I die, she is going to come and greet me, kissing my face, and mine, hers!

Hello! I haven't been on here for about a week and boy have I missed it! Life just got REAL busy! So, anyway, about your puppy and the bed. When I first got my Holly on Xmas eve, she was only about 4.5-5 pounds and 4 months old, so my husband suggested we use my children's bean bag, put it beside our bed and pound the bean bag to make it slanted and we actually physically walked Holly up and down the bag a few times to show her it was ok and she got the idea and as long as the bean bag is next to the bed, she knows she can come up! She loves it! Half the time, she stops on the bean bag and plays for awhile before bedtime while my husband is fixing his pillow or getting ready for bed, etc. She loves her bean bag stairs! :) Try it! It may sound funny, but it does work! Hope this idea can be helpful!

Thanks, Sharon. The bean bag/pillow step concept would be perfect to go around the two sides of my bed, since its in the corner, and have plenty of room! My mom and dad will babysit and take naps with her during the day, and since they have NO room around their bed, we will need the bed gate/fence deal. I feel better already. Maybe I could make some pretty slipcovers for some foam steps, that match my room! I'm having such fun, and just ordered my Puppy John! Signed, SO excited!

Hi Susy - What size is your bed? The reason why I ask is that Bailey and I sleep in a king size sleigh bed, so it's kind of like a crib at the foot and the head and I put big pillows all around the floor on the sides (just in case), I'm a very light sleeper, and Bailey kind of does the "spoon" thing with me, so I know when he gets up at night (also, he lets me know when he needs to go wee wee by nipping my nose!!!) Good luck!

Cotton was having trouble jumping up on the bed so I got him a foam flip chair. They are the kind that you can flip out and they make a bed--kind of. I got mine at wal-mart. They also have them a Kmart. It took him a while to get used to the idea of climbing up on it, but he did learn. I only wish that he would use it to climb down off of the bed. Instead, he flings himself off of the bed with grand leap and lands with a resounding thump--frays my nerves everytime I hear it. I even purchased a new bed that is lower to the ground because of his flying stunts!

I have a twin bed, snuggled up into the corner, with my slant board leaning up onto one side. I really like the ideas about soft cushions around incase of jumping or falling. I am getting an extra tiny, so I reeeeally need to be careful. I put a baby crib protector around the wall for padding and warmth, and she gets the inside corner...and spider patrol! Ha!

Susy, I have a tiny too - Bella is 9 months old and 3 pounds. I bought her a Sherpa Bag and she slept in the bag on the bed in the beginning now she just sleeps on the bed. The bag will come in handy for taking her with you around town and when you travel - I have the delux model but I plan to get another one with roll down flaps - they are just about invisible in the bags and you can take them into grocery stores, coffee shops etc as long as they dont bark no one knows you have anything other than what looks like gym bag/carry-on luggage - I also have a Bichon and he used to jump up on the couch and bed to get away from her - she first mastered the couch and then the bed. The first time she managed the bed she jumped up to see me as I was under the weather and in bed. Now its like the Indy 500 - she runs with the Bichon up on the furniture in living room - off the furniture around the tables then into and up on the bed. This is repeated as often as they can manage in a few minutes. I prayed that all this exercise has strengthened her legs and bones. She is an amazing jumper and can jump almost up to her daddy's waist and he is 6'. Until they get used to the bed they can be safe and close by you in the bag.

This sounds great, Shirley. What size did you buy? I looked at jemarpet.com and they only had one model. What do you like about the Deluxe vs roll-up version. Is one easier to use. Would I be able to fit my wallet, a few zip disks, my small cosmetic bag, a little water bottle, some food, and a toy in there? Then, When I take her into work with me no one will notice! Tooo cool!

Susy, I got the delux one because it was the only model pet supply store carried here in Calgary. I paid $100 Canadian so about $67 U.S. - I just looked up Sherpa Bags and pulled up picture and the model I have has no side pouch. It is small size and would hold a few of my Bella. When I travel with her I put her retractible leash, baggie of dry dog food, small stainless bowl - rabbit size for water, her brush and comb and a travel kit for myself from airline (toothbrush etc) in other pouch I had her documentation. Inside I have her fleece liner over a piece of carpet. You can order extra liners 2/$10. I took Bella everywhere with me - Safeways, Restaurants, shopping etc. Only place I was asked to leave was at Wendy's hamburger joint - too funny. She preferred a window so clawed a 4" square hole in mesh for her head. The next one I get will be roll-up then if she makes a hole I can always roll down. Lady at Sherpa was wonderful and sent me enough extra mesh to repair Bella's Sherpa as well as the first cheapie bag I bought. I just rattle the handles and she follows me and gets in her bag right away. The bag also has a ring anchor to tie dog inside bag - I dont use it. If you look on internet search sherpa bags and pull down picture you will see the big dog they show with bag. I too am afraid of spiders so would not think of putting my bed in a corner or by window where they could get me.
