Wee Wee Pads
by SILVIA
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
I just got a 2 m.o. male maltese. I have benn trying the wee wee pads for a week now, but my dog ONLY uses the wee wee pad to sleep and play on it! He has his own "bed" just on the side of the wee wee pad, but he seems to prefer the pads! Should I place to wee wee pads away from the bed?

DISCUSSION:

Yes, you should move the pads away from the dogs bed. Dogs generally don't like to eliminate near in or near their beds. Move it across the room and if the dog pees elsewhere, try to get some of the urine on one of the wee wee pads just to scent it. Hopefully that will give your pup some idea where to go the next time. Make sure you praise your dog (a lot) when he gets it right!!

I have a 13 week old uppy, Boris, who is doing so well with the wee wee pads. We do have a big space, all on one level, no stairs, and I have the pad in the bathroom, the door is open and he goes. However, i think what has helped is that if he is in a room with me playing, I put one down on the floor in that room, just in case, and afew times he has scooted over and used that one. I don't plan to have one in every room, but while he is so young, it seems that it has prevented what would have been an accident.

Lilly is 16 weeks today and we are really hit and miss with the wee wee pads. I put her in a playpen type set up at night with her crate open and a balnket and the pads. She always uses the pads at night..sometimes even two stools. But I haven't ben able to get her to go to the pads during the day. I take her outside frequently and she does go in the back yard but I want her to use the pads if she can't hold it. Any advice? Thanks Karen And Lilly

Within two minutes of bringing Rudy into his new home lastnight, he went potty on the weewee pads. I have one down in the living room and three down on the floor is Rudy's room. I have his bed and food on one side of the room and the weewee pads on the other laying side by side. Please remember to praise him for hitting the target. Even when Rudy wasn't quite centered over his target, the fact that he went pee on (or in this case, near) the pad was cause for major celebration!! Have fun with your baby! Amanda & Rudy

I have been using two pads next to each other. It encourages better aim, but even a near miss or a near hit, as it were, deserves praise and Boris gets plenty of it
