Doggie Day Care
by Beth
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Wondering if anyone here has any experience with doggie day care. Since I brought 9 month old Tucker home 6 months ago, I've always worked out of my home and Tucker has grown quite used to me being around a lot. I'm now relocating and taking a new job that will have me working in an office and I'm worried about the little guy. I thought about having a pet sitter come every day to let him out and play with him a bit, but the doggie day care concept seems even better. Tucker just LOVES to play with other dogs. I'm going to check this place out (Classic Canine Bed & Biscuit!), but wondered if anyone had any words of wisdom for me. Thanks. Beth
DISCUSSION:
Hi, Beth,I have on occasion put my dog at a doggie day care in Manhattan. My experiences have been good. I have never had a pet sitter come to my house, so in that sense, I have no bases for comparison. At this particular doggie day care which I have frequented, big dogs and small dogs are separated, and violent dogs and dogs without all their necessary shots are not allowed. Their window for drop-off and pick up is between 7am and 10pm and, in that window, the dogs are only "put in their kennels" between 7am and 9am (for breakfast) and 5pm and 7pm (for dinner). All other hours are "play time" in a large enclosed area with artificially simulated sunlight.
I like the security of the idea that my dog doesn't get walked by strangers in Manhattan, and I like the idea that the dogs are free to "run wild" instead of being cooped up in an enclosed space. My only reservation about doggie day cares is that Mika, after romping around, comes back with matts and tangles. I once left him at the doggie day care for 5 days over Christmas, and his hair was a disaster after that and had to be professionally remedied. But, he came back happy, and that's all that matters.

Chuin - Thanks for your reply. I'm going to be trying Tucker out at a daycare next week. I'll check them out and if all seems okay, I'll give him a try. He just loves to play with other dogs so much that I thought it would be a good solution. I know I would feel a lot better about the whole deal.

Hi Beth - Like Chuin I live in Manhattan. Bailey is starting a pet sitter Friday (4 hours in my apartment) he's still only 4 and a half months, so I opted not to send him to day care yet ( I want to wait until he is neutered, etc.) I've heard wonderful things about some of the daycare centers in my area, and personally can't wait to get Bailey enrolled to work on his "socializing" skills. Let me know how it goes with you.
Chuin - if we are allowed to post names of centers in Manhattan, could you please let me know where your little one goes, my vet gave me some referrals, and was wondering if yours was on the list. Thanks!

Hi, Mary & Bailey, it's on the upper east side, and their number is (212) 996666. :-) You can go check it out too -- the doggie play area is by a LARGE window so their mommies and daddies can watch them play.

Thanks Chuin! I live and work on the west side (and my vets on the west side as well) but I'll check out the place you recomended - There was also an amazing one upper west by Lincoln Center, although it was kind of pricy - it was cute though, they had big fake trees (kind of like the ones in Disney) with Astro turf!! I couldn't stop laughing, but unlike yours I think they "mix" dog sizes there and they also don't accept < 1 year olds. I don't know less than four pound Bailey with a 40 lb Rottweiler? I don't think so.

Chuin, What is that phone number again?? Your post is missing 1 digit in the phone number... Thanks.

Hi, Stacey--ouch! I didn't realize about the missing number. It's (212) 99-66666. 2 nines, and the rest are sixes... all 5 of them!!
Chuin
Stacey - I noticed that two, but I figured I had 10 chances to get it right!! LOL - I want to take Bailey there one day - it's just the west side / east side thing.

Double ouch! You should've said something. heh! :-)
Whenever I do dial the number, I hit 2 nines, and hit a "random" number of sixes, because I remember their number as 2 nines, and the rest are sixes. I guess I never really knew how many sixes I tend to hit, although, I've never failed to get through, although, logically, I SHOULD know that there are 5 sixes. See what I mean? Alls well that ends well! My neighbour's dog goes there 2 days a week and loves it. He's a westie yorkie mix and has a constant expression like this: =:o
Very cute!
