Slicker Brush or ?
by Bernadette & Bee Bee
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
I know this probably sounds very stupid, but can anyone tell me exactly what a slicker brush is? What kind of brush should be used on a Maltese. Thank you for your assistance
DISCUSSION:
In my humble opinion, the ONLY brush that should be used on our darlings is a Mason Pearson brush. They adore it, and look forward to brushings. Ask anyone on this site who has one. I use a Mason Pearson on my own hair and wouldn't use anything else. Get the combination boars hair and nylon pocket style. I don't like slickers. They are metal brushes and I haven't had any pet who liked them.

No slicker brush! It will ruin the coat, but a pin brush is a very good idea. A rubber backing and metal bristles that look very much like a human brush. I have been intrigued with the idea of a Mason Pierson brush after hearing such great reports on here, but no way am I prepared to deal with a forty five dollar brush - so I went to Target and got a natural boar bristle brush and after only one usage the coat seems silkier! It was only six dollars and Phoebe loved it, of course Phoebe loves being groomed anyway. I would suggest a pin brush, a good detangler comb, and a natural bristle brush.

My vet recommended that I use a flea comb for grooming, and I wondered why Eddie hated it so much. I couldn't believe that I kept reading that Maltese loved to be groomed!!! I'm going to the store tomorrow to buy him a natural bristle brush and a pin brush. Thanks.

Leslie, I too bought a boar brush while awaiting the shipment of a Mason Pearson one. The first few times, the puppies liked it but it soon became "picky". The ends wear off extremely quickly & there is a second layer of really sharp bristles. Cant remember the brand but one the dear ole WalMart carries!
