Pom & Maltese get along??
by Sera & Snowy
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Our friend got a 3 mth old female Pomeranian but can't keep her as he already has a terrier n his mom won't look after another for him. He wanted us to hv the Pom as he knows we luv Snowy n will take gd care of the Pom too. I'd like to hv a baby girl n a companion for Snowy (1 yr 3 mth intact male). My mom looks a/f Snowy when we're at work n she'll luv another grandchild. I'm visiting the Pom this wkend n maybe also intr Snowy to her. What do you guys think? Is there anything I shd look out for? If I decide to hv the Pom, I'll bring her 1st to the vet for checkups n decision to spay, etc. My grandpa used to own 2 male Poms n they were fun n very loving though more agressive n not house trained (prob grandpa's fault). Any of you own a Pom n a Maltie? I'm most concerned whether the 2 breeds get on well n if Pom'll bully my Snowy. If there's a chance that any harm will come to Snowy then I'll rather not hv the Pom. Pls advise.
DISCUSSION:
If you'll neuter your male dog, you'll have a greater chance at introducing another dog now, or at any time in the future. Your male is young enough that being neutered will help curtail all territorial and possessive behavior. He's gonna be all over that female Pom and unless you plan on putting a chastity belt on her, you'll have more than one homeless pup that needs a home! Please. Neuter your male, adopt the Pom, and everyone can live happily ever after. Or, let's find some more suitable home for the Pom, without any intact males! I understand your desire to have the Pom pup, and your excellent intentions. Try to think with your head and not just your kind heart!

I have foster several male poms and find that they are more aggressive and demanding than Maltese. They seem to try to take over, and will fight (literally) to be in the lap, or first at the water dish, etc. Casper didn't like them at all, and he asked me not to foster any more males. Females might be different. Either way, now would be a good time to have your male neutered. Then, when the perfect companion comes, you'll both be ready.

First thing you need to do is have Snowy neutered - this is healthier for him but will definitely curb his territorial tendencies. No reason the two dogs can't get along, but it's a matter of indiviual personalities.

A while back my neighbors had a male pomp that they let run around the area, one day it came into my yard and I started playing with it, and it seem real friendly, so I brought Aurora outside to see if they would get along and play, they got along great, and I could see that they seemed to like each other alot, and played for hours, it was the first and only doggie friend that Aurora has had from the day I brought her home. Aurora thinks that she is some kinda of bad a** and will run off dogs that are ten times her size, this is the only dog that she would let in the yard without raising a fuss. This went on for about a week the pomp was over here all the time, but it also was all over too, one day the owner came into my yard and asked if I had seen her porm, I told her that it had been over here alot, but I had not seen it today, well no one else did either and the porm vanished. The only clue is a neighbor said he heard a dog fight the night the pomp vanished, so I think it was killed by some other dogs in the area. Oh yes about three weeks later I asked the lady about her dog, she said that she had already gotten another pomp, but would like to have her other dog back too, and their big white dog still run all over the place. But I digress, dogs have personalities, just like people, the only way to find out if they get along is to let play together, and see what happens, make sure you watch them close, even dogs this small can hurt each other, if they have a strong dislike for each other.

Sera, I have a Pom and Maltese and they are great buddies. They are both females and have been spayed. The Pom is older, I brought Tasha {Maltese} in the house at 11 weeks old. They play very well together, when the Pom gets tired of "puppy abuse" she goes under the bed. I think they would be fine together.
