maltese in bed-harmful ?
by laurie
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
When I recently mentioned to a friend that our maltese Brandi likes to sleep on my son's bed, she said "oh no - thats harmful to your health". It seems she had read this "somewhere" recently but could remember exactly what the problem was. Has anyone heard this too? I could understand a concern if we were allergic to dog fur/hair or were talking about an outside dog or one that is not current on shots and worming.
But Brandi is kept inside and is bathed weekly..... I can't image what harm she could pose.
DISCUSSION:
Hi Laurie, We have six that sleep with us everynight. They all have there own place and its been that way for at least two years now. Neither Bev or myself has ever "caught" anything--ever. My 3 year old grandson came over and spent a night with us last month and slept in the bed and the dogs in the living room. I caught a terrible cold that took me several days to get over. Go figure??
Seriously, its not harmful, our Maltese love to sleep in the bed and I don't mind it at all.
Jay
Hi, Laurie my Maltese also sleeps with me all the time. She has been sleeping with me for about 3 months and I haven't had any problems.
Rita
Laurie, no way is sleeping with your Maltese harmful! I slept with my previous maltese for 16 years and I'm still alive. And Buster sleeps with us now. Someone has their screws loose!

I agree with Jay 100%. But understand I am not a doctor. My 2 babys sleep with me everynight, one under the covers one on top of the covers, wouldn't have it any other way. MaryP

Hi Laurie. I agree with the others here. I have never heard of anything like that before either. I have three maltese and one sleeps with us and the other two sleep right beside our bed in crates propped up on chairs due to a potty problem (BriAnna) and because one baby (Annie) is too tiny and we are afraid we would roll over on her or something so we keep her in her crate. I wish all three could be in our bed. It is not harmful to you in any way. Take care:-)

Sugar has been sleeping with us for 11 years and I can't imagine it any other way! Neither can Sugar!!! :) The only problem is that she seems to require as much room as an adult person.

Hi Laurie, Our Cody and Ashleigh have slept with us since they first came to us, Cody at 11 weeks, Ash at 6. We wouldn't have it any other way. We love waking up to our eye lashes kissed, and they are so little, the cuddle is something we expected to be there just like our pillows! Never had any health problems at all. It's the best! gail

Sophie sleeps with us every night - and if we have to go somewhere overnight and she can't come :( she sleeps with my mum! Not even mum's own dog does that! It's bad for my health when Sophie isn't there!! Carmen & Sophie

Dear Laurie, Our Chibi has taken over our bed. She definitely likes to snuggle in between me and my husband, in other words as little as she is, she owns a third of the bed. Neither me nor my husband has caught any for of ailment from her - she's very healthy to begin with and most definitely the cleanest dog around.

I don't believe there's any health problem to you, except maybe not getting as much sleep as you like. We tried letting Sunshine stay on our bed a few nights, but he kept waking up around 4am ready to play. It was pleasant to wake up to puppy kisses, but not at 4am. There may health concerns for your furbaby though: once during the night, my wife accidentally kicked/pushed Sunshine off the bed, much to his surprise, judging by the yelp and thud. It really scared us, but he wasn't hurt. (Probably confused though, because he did nothing to deserve it.) These two things together caused us to continue keeping him in a crate beside the bed for now.

Oooooohhh how sweet reading all of your posts! We put Katie in bed with us but after a while when she's ready to go to sleep, she goes to the side of the bed where her kennel cab is on the night stand and wants to be placed in her "own" bed. I don't close the crate and in the morning just before 5:30 a.m. (that's the time I have my alarm clock set) she whines to wake me up so I can let her out to potty. I wish she would want to sleep in our bed, but she likes her's better. Maybe it firmer. LOL!

Laurie, I agree with all the other posts. I had a dog who slept with me every night for 12 years. Now I have Layla, my Maltese, who sleeps at my side. I also have Oreo & Shilo, my two cats who sleep, one at my feet and the other on top of my pillow. Having them sleep with me have made the nights more cozy and I always seem to wake with a smile.

Our 15 year old Maltese, Tai-Tai, slept with us every night for many years. Right between our two pillows. It was "Tai-Tai's Place." Our current pup, Kashi, will sleep in the bed for awhile and then "ask" to be put down into his little bed, which is right by my side. He is a lttle bit more independent than Tai was, but there is absolutely NO reason to be concerned about sleeping with a perfectly clean gorgeous Maltese. They are the "Cuddles of Life!" Enjoy your baby and tell your friend to check her sources.

Laurie, Munchkin has been sleeping with us for 7 years now and Amber 2 years. We would not have it any other way. Have a great day!

The other night I woke up with Angel so close on my pillow that her hair was up my nose! Angel is 4 yrs old and has been sleeping with us since the day we got her and neither my husband or I can remember the last time either of us were sick. And, if that doesn't convince you, I also give Angel licks off my ice cream cones and I'm alive and well. Wow, Jay & Bev, you must have a really big bed.

The only two things I can think of that might happen with a dog in the bed is that either you would roll over on them or they would fall off - that is the only reason that Phoebe does not sleep with us as did my Yorkie for so long - we have a rather high bed now, but when we travel she sleeps in the hotel bed with us. If you want your dog in the bed with you then by all means go for it!

We had a dachshund that slept with us, then we had a lhasa with a lot of allergies that slept with us for 11 1/2 years, and now Alex sleeps with us. We are still alive and have not eaven caught any allergies from the lhasa. I don't know where your friend got this one from.

People have been sleeping with dogs for years, and I can not ever remember ever getting sick from it, so it seems safe to me. In fact in some places it can be down right helpful, to sleep with dogs, remember the group "Three Dog Night" will they got their name from an old eskimo saying about how cold the night was, a three dogs night ment it was really cold, because that is how many dogs it took to keep warm. Of course if the eskimos had maltese it may have gotten all the way up to 12 furbaby night.

We couldn't sleep if our Max and Uki (lhasa) did NOT sleep in bed with us. We have always slept with our dogs- had to buy a king bed when we had our husky. Never caught anything from them- not even fleas. Cannot imagine anyone not sleeping with their precious furbaby Maltese.Sallie, Ed, Max and Uki-

No dogs in bed sounds like one of those stories our moms made up when we were kids to keep us from doing something THEY had a thing about. Every dog I've ever had has slept with me, except for one who preferred my son's bed when he was just a little guy. Luce sleeps wrapped around my head on my pillow..that's been her place since she was a teeny thing who just came to live with me. The Booper sleeps on the bed too, but only until I turn out the lights, and then he's gone. I think his old family had him guard the first floor, because he seems to think he MUST be there to keep watch through the night. He sleeps on the sofa, by the way.

I just had to respond to this post and brag on my husband, Larry. First of all, I know of no reason why your baby couldn't sleep with you unless, of course you want to get some sleep! =^) I slept with my babies for the last 16 years and can't imagine the bed without them. But I digress. . .Garbo is a 16-year old llaso apso with arthritis in her back legs. She can't jump on or off the bed anymore so Larry built her a portable staircase to put at the end of the bed so she wouldn't hurt herself. Not only do I have great babies, I got the last of the really wonderful men!

Malteze, thanks for the funny trivia. Never heard that before. Laurie, at this risk of repeating everyone else, I've slept with Angel since he was 9 weeks old (okay, a lot of sheets had to go into the washer until we really got things down but that was my choice - I wanted him sleeping with me). Never a problem. Although he does hog the bed. I sleep way over on one side and usually wake up to find him pressed hard against me so I'm in danger of rolling off the bed, not him! But I love feeling him cuddle against me. when it's really cold, he crawls under the covers and sleeps behind me knees; otherwise he wraps himself atop my pillow around my head. When he was really little, he'd wrap himself under my chin and stick his head inside my pajama collar!

In my Opinion there is no other place for a maltese to sleep but on your bed(my pillow). I think some people think in old terms like "dogs belong outside" or "I would never let a dog lick my face" or "yuck, if the dog licked the plate, throw it out, you can't eat off of it anymore" Well of course we all know that does not apply to our precious maltese.

Ditto on all the above! My dogs have always slept with me. Taffy started out with both of us on the couch the first night, and in bed the next and ever since. She sure takes up her share of the bed too! I love having her there, and I love her kisses!

Laurie - When we brought Kiwi home, we had a darling little bed all prepared for her. I think she sayed in it for 30 seconds before she jumped up on our bed. I had never had a dog sleep with me before. She has slept with us every night for over 7 years and we would not have it any other way. She is the best cuddler in the world. We have never gotten sick from her. So, go for it and enjoy.

As soon as our little male was housebroken he claimed his spot in bed, and as soon as we brought his "wife" home she joined right into the mix. Harmful? I can't think of any reason what-so-ever. I never before these two had a small breed of dog,but since now wouldn't dream of having anything else. One of the great things about this breed is how they can go ANYWHERE AT ALL including the bed. Some people just don't understand how much a part of the family the little ones are. Have fun and don't worry about what anyone else thinks, follow your own intuition.

On the contrary, sleeping with a Maltese is GOOD for you!! They cuddle up and keep you warm, and wake you with those beautiful eyes and kisses!! My health would be failing if I didn't have my babies there to keep me warm and happy!

Laurie, I love when Taffy cuttles up when it's cooler out, but even if it's warm, she feels like a teddy bear. I have to lol when I see her head on my pillow like an adult sleeps. She has a habit of twirling aound or dig, but when she puts her butt in my face, I try gently to turn her around! She loves to touch my body, I guess she feels safe that way!
