Allergies/Ears/Itching
by Leslie R
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Yesterday I had to take Phoebe to the vet with ear trouble, frequent shaking of the head and scratching. She asked me about the face rubbing and such while we were waiting for the lab results on the culture & may very well be food allergies and gave us a sample of some L.A. Diet which is based on rice and salmon and trout, Phoebe sure likes the taste! Her skin is good, but she does like to rub her face on things and will sometimes chew her feet.It turns out the ear infection is a bacterial infection, but the vet said it could stem from the long ears - hair inside and of course they cleaned and put her on antibiotic drops for the next week.

DISCUSSION:

Leslie, Munchkin had 2 ear infections this past summer (first time and she is 7 years old). Our vet thought that it is allergy related and prescribed half a Benadryl tablet daily and some antibiotic drops. Couple of weeks after her second infection her ear got better and she did not had anymore problems thanks God. Our vet concluded that it was not allergies it was bacterial. And I stopped giving her the Benadryl tablets. Still so far so good. Have a great day!

I also have the same problem with my 4 month old Maltese she constanly sratches her ears. She also has long hair in her ears. I took her to the groomer so they could trim it off and clean her ears but she is still the same. Can anyone give me some advice too.
Rita
Rita please take your dog to the vet - it could be a bacterial infection - yeast infection - and it could be a food allergy. Professional advice is definitely in order.
