Wee wee pads leaking
by Tricia, Beau and Maisy
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Perhaps a dumb question, but with Maisy's recent kidney troubles, I have gone back to wee wee pads. When I change the pad to a new one, I see that it is wet on the plastic side. I thought these things were waterproof on one side. Do I have defective wee pads or is Maisy a faucet?

DISCUSSION:

This is something that I have never had a problem with, and let me tell you when Phoebe gets up in the morning she is also a faucet! I don't use the "Wee Wee" brand - I use the Simple Solution Puppy Training Pads so I don't know if this is a difference...

Not a dumb question... I am having the same problem with little Sara. They are likely not leaking, she is probably going right on the edge and what is not hitting the pad is running under it, thus the appearance it is leaking. I have ordered the puppy john, I'll let you know if it solves the problem.

If she's peeing on the edge, that will happen. I have found that if the paper is wet already, Ahzsie will try to find a dry spot, which is very likely on the edge. When I change the paper often, I tend not to see the leaks. And Ahzsie seems to appreciate it. Seems to jump up and down with a happy dance whenever he sees me changing it.

I have sometimes noticed the plastic side of Pooh's wee wee pad wet. I'm certain that this is sometimes due to the fact that if Pooh wees a little bit too far towards the edge, some of it seeps under the wee wee pad via the sides. However, I seem to have noticed wetness on the bottom side of the wee wee pad even if Pooh does a bullseye, which really shouldn't be the case. So, now that you've mentioned the same, I'm curious to know too!

Tricia, you don't say whether or not Maisy tends to center over the pad or go more towards the edge. My experience with Angel was that when he went near the edge and, if some got on the plastic border, it would wick underneath the plastic. I hope that's all it is. When I would catch Angel going near or on the edge, I would quickly scoop him up and pat the center, saying something like "center" and then praise him/give him a treat. Pretty quickly all I had to do was say it when I saw him approach the pad and he'd go right in the middle. Then we'd celebrate! Hope this helps.

How about putting something underneath the pad, like a disposable aluminum cookie sheet or a cat litter pan? The cookie sheet might be better since it is very shallow and easier to step over.

I have my babys trained to go on pads also, but I use the human kind from the pharmacy or hospital supply. They are bigger and cheaper. The only time I have a problem or I should say they have a problem is if the pad is alittle too full and they go to the edge. They sometimes have a run over. MaryP

one more thing...I found the papers made for puppies do leak, so I changed to human pads found at the drugstore and as long as Ahzsie doesn't go onthe edge, they're terrific. Never leak like the doggie pads.

Hi Tricia, I just read your post about the wee wee pads and can't help but ask how Maisy is feeling. Have you been able to work out a diet that she likes and is appropriate? When Sugar was so sick earlier this year we had a terrible time getting her to eat. Luckily she was able to eat meat and so for a long time she ate better than her family! We did discover, though, that she liked some of the most unusual things in the veggie dept ---red pepper, radishes, Chinese pea pods (I kept them chilled in water in the frig, so they were nice and crisp) and romaine (the thick tough part). She still gets some red pepper as a treat every night before bed! I was trying to get fiber into her as well as the protein. Maybe Maisy would like some of these also, who knows? You and she are still in my prayers and Sugar sends wags and woofs of support to Maisy.
