Earning C.D. legs
by Chris
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Hi! Just wanted to enter a "brag" about my Maltese, "Nicholas"! On Oct. 3 & 4, he earned his first two legs towards an AKC "Companion Dog" title! On Sat. 10/3 he scored a 187.5 (out of a possible 200) points and on Sun 10/4 he got a 178.0 (he got real confident on the second day and did a little "improvisation" on his off-lead heeling and recall exercises!)A score of 170 is qualifying so...he's got two legs on his first time out (you need three legs to earn a title)! On Sat. he also won a trophy for "high scoring Maltese" - of course he was the only Maltese entered in regular classes, so..... I've entered him in two more obedience trials, Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, so we hope to complete his title that weekend. Then, on to "open" work! So all you Maltese folks out there who are training your pups "Keep up the Good Work"! These little guys can do it! Nicholas seems to love it - he's such a ham! Thanks for letting me brag!

DISCUSSION:

Congratulations and a big hug Chris for all your good work and a bisquit for Nicholas. It's such fun to have fur babies who understand us. If you are showing in the Florida area maybe I'll see you. I'' be stewarding at a trial that weekend. Best wishes, your scores were real good. My guys always have had crooked sits so I couldn't get much higher myself.

CONGRATS to you and Nicholas. You keep up the great work. Hope to see you at the next AMA NATIONAL SPECIALTY in May. Enter Nicholas----he can also be in the PARADE OF CHAMPIONS if he is a CHAMPION by than. Go to my webbsite and see PRINCE in the 1998 SPECIATY.http://www.capecod.net/~jforrest Just think, you can put Nicholas there, too. Good Luck and all the Best.

Congrats! Is this your Nov A dog? The scores sound great to me. You got a green ribbon and a prize! I can't wait to get my little one and start trying myself with a maltese. I show my cockers in obed, both have CDs and working on open/utility with them. I just did it for fun and wasn't much worried about high scores. I was just glad they didn't go visiting too often :). You don't need to wait to start on utility either.

Congratulations!! Being in novice training with Lilli myself, I know what a wonderful accomplishement this is. If yours is anything like Lilli, it's a bit of a journey to get them ready to show. One day we will arrive, but right now, we continue to practice. Maybe someday we'll see you at a show, too. Hope you get that third leg the next time out!

Congratulations Chris! You have every right to brag. Have a great day.

Nicholas and I thank you folks for all your support! Nick is my Novice B dog. I have a Bullmastiff, Duffy, who was my Novice A dog and he earned his CD in three trials with two fourth place and one third place ribbon (his scores were in the 180's). To Judee: the trials I have Nick entered in are at the Monsignor Pace high school in Miami on 10/31 and 11/1 - I don't remember off-hand which obedience clubs are hosting. If that's where you're stewarding, maybe we'll see you! Nick's fronts and finishes are not often really straight but I tend to feel okay about sacrificing points if I have good attitude and so far Nick's has been very positive and upbeat! Our latest problem has been squeaky toys ringside during his preformance, so we're working on squeaky toy desensitization, so to speak (squeak?!?)!

Wow! And yesterday I was so pleased with Darby's progress....and we are only talking about having him sit on command....with my pocketful of treats! I am hoping that he can really become a more obedient boy...congrats to you on your success!
Connie and Darby
Chris, boy do I know what you are talking about with squeaky toys. We hadn't got all the way through that process yet when at one show, we had 5 sec left to go in the down when someone squeaked a toy 4 or 5 times about two feet away from him outside the ring. He jumped up went on point at the toy. I literally counted to five and the judge said return to your dogs with him on point and everything. We did finally got through that though. :). Let us know what happens.

Dear Chris. I am so excited, I will be stewarding at Pace High. I am a member of the Miami Obedience Club and donated the High Toy trophy. I will be rooting for you to win it! I will look for you, I don't have a dog to show right now. At the all obedience trials it is much quieter ringside so shouldn't be any squekies ringside.

Congratulations! Gee, I remember, just a few months ago, whem you asked about maltese in obedience! How did you solve the backbreaking heeling issue? Bailey (8 months) was in his first show n go match over the weekend - I was concerned about the downstay, since I always have talked him through it. Wouldn't you know it... he did fine for that, but for stand for exam, he wriggled with excitement and licked the judge! I firmly believe that kissing the judge should get bonus points ( he NQed). Normally he is absolutely fine for the stand for exam. Shows that you just never know! Again, congratulations and hope Nicholas gets his CD title next month!! Hope he gets Mary Lou's High Toy trophy!
