Won't stay inside.

ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
My 1 year old male maltese,Cream, loves to be outside. Rain or shine he cries until he's let out, then he cries if he's tied. He's been nuetered and it didn't seem to help. He wants to roam the neighborhood and does everything in his power to get loose or run out of the house to freedom. We have another male maltese who doesn't behave like this at all. Has anyone heard of this? Our property is to large to fence in and he breaks my heart with those big sad eyes of his!
DISCUSSION:
Nancy, you should probably take Cream out on a leash or halter. I would not let him out alone. Who knows what would happen. I don't let Buster out of my site. I don't have a fenced in yard but we live on 10 acres of wooded land. But when we go away to someone elses house he is on his halter. I would suggest the leash or halter to let Cream out. That way he won't run away. May need some obedience training also.

Nancy :) Seems that little Cream is an inquisitive one! :) There are some great wire pens for the yard. They dont have a top, just semi-assembled wire mesh sections that stick into the ground. This might work. My Chiclet would dart off in the blink of an eye if I didnt keep her leashed. She heads out toward the park because she anticipates its walk time! LOL Little Gizmo never leaves my side! Also, perhaps some training would help as well. Good luck! :)

Nancy: We also have a large yard, but we fenced in a nice area of about 75ft. by 75ft. for Skippy. This gives him plenty of room to play and I can keep an eye on him. Maybe Cream would be happy in his own play yard.

I agree! The Maltese is not an outside dog. Your problem can be fixed by taking your puppy to obedience training. It makes all the difference. No matter how cute they are, a well- behaved Maltese is much more lovable!

Don't know if it will help but I keep Angel on a trolley line, a rust-proof stainless steel line coated in plastic that runs from my back door to a tree 50' away. Attached to that is a 10' line that clips onto his leash. Sometimes I substitute a 50' line so he has more run, however, it usually results in him crawling under the hedge and onto the neighbor's driveway which runs alongside my property. Anyway, it keeps Angel confined but he can still run at top speed around the yard. If yours really yanks hard (dogs will choose to choke themselves rather than stop pulling if the urge is strong enough), I'd definitely go with a harness. Also, Four Paws makes a pull-free leash that I bought 'cos Angel yanks on his lead all the time. This is a harness that goes behind their forelegs and when they begin to pull, it tightens behind the legs and the uncomfortable feelings makes them stop pulling abruptly without doing damage like choking them. Best of luck. It took me over a year to keep Angel from bolting out the door when I opened it but he did learn and now he's totally trustworthy.
