Edge wetting on Wee-pads
by Chel
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Ok, this is my 2nd quesion! Help! *laughs* My dear little Bogie, who is doing so wonderful with his wee-wee pad training, has a problem. He will ONLY pee on the very edge of the pads. Which means it runs off all over my floor. He has two pads at the moment, one in the family room (on the carpet, yet) and one in the master bath (the other doesnt' have enough floor space for the wee-wee pad). How embarassing when a guest goes to the bathroom and there's a big puddle by the pad.

We have one pad in the family room because when we first got him and he wasn't familar with the house and couldn't make it to the bathroom when he HAD to go. I'm in the process of weaning him from that one. (Good thing I bought a carpet cleaner!!!)

I tried taking an old litter box (i am currently trying to toilet train the cat, so it was free. Fun, fun, fun) and putting the mats in there. He refuses. Any suggestions?

DISCUSSION:

You might try the puppy john. You put the wee wee pad in it. It has a small ledge so it will help keep the dog in the right spot.

Congrats on your baby Chel! Comet uses wee wee pads and sometimes goes on the edge. You might try folding the edge under and then there's more pad and less edge. If anyone else has any suggestions, I'd be interested, too! Lately I've been using flat underpads that are used for incontinent humans. I can purchase 36 of the "large" pads for only $6 or $7 making them half the price of the pet store variety. They are not scented but Comet knows to go on them. Best wishes on this training project. I find the pads extrememly convenient as I work too far away to come home to let him out and they are wonderful when the weather is not nice. Comet will go outside or inside. however, he does not bark to go outside to let me know. He only goes outside if he is already there. This is your best site for information, Chel. It's better than any book or magazine!

Well, you should only have you'r Maltese go potty in one place. That way he doesn't get confused where to go to the bathroom.

Well, I searched the archives on puppy johns and it sounds great! *laughs* Good to know I wasn't the only one with this problem. Seems a lot of furbabies like to put their front feet only the wee-wee pad. Defeats the purpose eh? ;) Thanks a ton! Chel & Bogie

Chel, even though my little guy's now housebroken (his choice, not mine), I'd originally started him on the pads. Angel would occasionally go on the edge so I'd try my best to catch him in the act so that I could pick him up and shift him slightly, then praise the daylights out of him. He learned pretty quickly that when Mom went, "Oh, no, no, no, honey, ON the pad!" that meant move in a bit and he was really good about it. I do remember reading when he was a tot that it's best to start with about 4 pads to create a much larger surface (I didn't do this because Angel was so tiny, I couldn't fathom him needing any more space than one provided) and then slowly take the add'l pads away, one by one, over the course of a few weeks, which teaches them to limit their space. I also read that you should only use a pad in one place, however, I had one in Angel's pen, one in the living room and one in my bedroom upstairs and Angel never had a problem distinguishing that it was okay to go in a few places and, once he decided he preferred to go only outside and I removed the pads (he would tear them up and run around the room with them in his teeth as if to say, "I'm a big boy now, I don't need these), he never once had an accident and mistakenly go where the pads once were. Good luck with your "edge" problem.

Dear Chel---CONGRATS on your new baby, Bogie. He sounds like he knows what to do. I use wee wee pads also and belly bends. I also show and so keep them wrapped when roaming in the house. Maybe you could put a bigger piece of plastic under neath the wee wee pads. You can buy rolls of plastic. Just an idea. Good Luck.Judy--Ju-dee MALTESE

You know that container that lines the doggy crate, well we stopped using the crate and put that plastic bottom under the wee-pad. It works great!

I don't mean to sound dumb, but what the heck is a belly bend??

What worked for me when I was wee pad training was after they went on one pad, I would take the center of the new pad and put a little urine from the old one (or the floor) in the center of the new pad. This was recommended in paper training, so I thought it couldn't hurt on the wee pads either. It worked for me. Also, Judy at Malteze; what are belly bends?

I used to try to get "mileage" out of the pads, but Ahzsie would pee on the floor when the pad was dirty. So I started changing the pads frequently. Ahzsie seems to get excited as if to say "Good girl! Good girl!" to me, and when the pad is clean, he seems to not miss the sweet spot. Just consider it a luxury. More pads, but less time mopping up the floor. It's taken him some time to train me...)

Hi Chel, I know this sounds weird, but is your pee pee pad against the wall? Turbo's used to be and he was an edge-wetter one day I moved it away from the wall, because he was having trouble circling the pad, as his circle got wider, he wound up off the pad. As soon as I pulled it away from the wall, he hasn't missed since. He actually hits dead center now. Try it, I hope it works for you!

Yes, sorry about that, typing error[SP]. Belly Bands. They go around the waist of your dog and are padded around the penis. Some people make their own. Some dog catalogs have them. You could ck out CHERRYBROOK. I buy mine at dog shows. JUDY--Ju-dee MALTESE

hi, i use newspaper and put plastic underneath it. i also got a piece of plastic that is hard. some people use it for windows. i can't think of what they call it. but it also works great under the paper. the other day i was in a pet store and they had a dog trained to go into the cat litter box the kind with a hood. they put the wee wee pads in it. their dog never goes outside.
