Toys for Maltese?
by Jay
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
I received a very nice message from the owner of the dogtoys.com website. Jill was asking for some information that I would like your input on. Here's part of her message, can we help her out?

".....I wondered if you've collected "Toy" information that you would share with us. Under our Toys-by-Breed section, we would like to add Maltese but have not yet collected enough data to list the 5 favorite toys of Maltese. We would be happy to acknowledge Malteseonly.com on our site as contributors to the favorite toy information for Maltese. Our holiday revisions are underway and we should be able to sneak in the addition of Maltese - if you have any info you can share.... Thanks, Jill, www.Dogtoys.com"

DISCUSSION:

Well my baby's favorite toys are the beanie babies. He's got practically every single type of toy there is, but the ones he loves the most are his dalmation beanie and lizard beanie.
Linda/NiNi/Daz

Both of my kids' very favorite toys came from one of those machines that you put a quarter in and grab a toy with the claw. About ten years ago, they used to put in the smoother (as opposed to fuzzy) stuffed toys. Gizmo's is a rabbit, Niki's is a little heart with gloves and tennies at the end of long arms and legs. They seem to love most small stuffed toys, and the Teenie Beenies as well. And, of course, their small-sized Bouda Velvets (strictly rationed) and NylaBones.
Tricia R.
Buster loves his Lambs wool toys, but of course ends up eating the stuffing out of them. The also loves the "Kong Toy". He enjoys playing with his regular ball. A small one of course and those doggie ropes. Loves to play tug of war. But his favoritest toy of all time and he does got thru them fast is the empty plastic soda bottle his daddy gives him. He plays with that for hrs. Sorry, I know its not a regular toy but thats his favorite right now. Ha!

Sara's favorite toys are beanie babies and a cloth ball that I got in the infant section of Wal-Mart (this is the 2nd one). I think she likes the cloth ball because she can pick it up easier than the other balls.
Shirley
Chico's favorite toy is a little 4-5" diameter hard-plastic ball. See the previous post for the full story!
Dean and Chico
Heidi LOVES "Madd Dog" bones. She also recently got for her birthday a battery operated Maltese who barks, walks and does a complete flip that she has really taken to.
Trish & Heidi
Casper's favorite toy is a six-inch long bone-shaped stuffed toy covered with imitation lamb's wool. It has a squeaker inside. He doesn't squeak it though, he just carries it around and sleeps with it under his chin.
Marcia and Casper
Well, Beau and Maisy's favorites are socks and underwear! But, as for the real toys, they love beanie babies. I would love cute bean bag type toys for them if available so my kids wouldn't come home to hidden and shaken beanie babies.
Tricia, Beau and Maisy
The other day when I went shopping for toys for Katie, I saw so many cute beanie babies that I would have liked to buy for her. I just wasn't sure if it would be safe because of the beans in them, but I see that you have not had any problems. Has anyone had any problems with the beanie babies?
Julie & Katie
Roosters very favorite toy is a stuffed cow slipper, matter of fact you could say he "loves" his cow, also a little ball that looks like a soccer ball that squeaks, also a little stuffed bear and of course his cow hoof. PK
PK
Flip has so many toys, but his favorite without a doubt is a huge black crow puppet with a big orange bill that he can pull on. His second favorite is a little bitty sqeaky mouse (cat toy).
Teri & Flip
My Maltese's favourite toy is a squeaky Warner Brother's wabbit!

Bailey's favorites are: small furry squeaky toys eg. carrot, banana, animals - any type of balls also small in size and the lighter weight the better - roarhide chew bones, same in carrot or any flavor - another big favorite are the lambswool looking squeaky toys - gingerbread man, or animals. Hope this helps.

Phoebe's two favorite toys are her Nylabone,(the really hard one & she has a couple of them that she pouts if she misplaces) hands(or paws) down, and her knotted rope. She also likes her heavy rubber spiked Rhino toy, and a firm squeaky ball. Unfortunately her favorite thing to chew on is still the cat...

Hi! Otto's favorite toys are the small Soft-Bites stuffed animals with squeakers. He has a Vermont-fleece 4 inch hippo for his girlfriend, too.
valan & otto
Diva loves her beanie babies, and most stuffed toys. She also likes cat balls with bells inside them. Fancy likes soft rubber toys she can chew on. And a big fuzzy ball as big as she is. Both like to retreive small rope type toys.
Mary Palmer
Lexie likes these "toys" in no particular order. Sewing pins safety pins staples

How she finds them, we don't know. She loves to put them in her mouth. She has never hurt herself, thank goodness. I bought some new shirts last week. I unwrapped one yesterday. Lexie was watching me.One of the pins fell on the floor. Lexie stayed in her bed and didn't bat an eyelash. I spent a half hour trying to find it, because I knew Lexie would. I couldn't find it. I walked out of the room, when I returned Lexie had the pin in her mouth. Not real funny trying to take it away from her.

Gizmo & Chiclet both LOVE the small fleece squeaky toys! The flat ones, like the camel, allow them to get their little mouth around the body & they have learned to work their jaws to get squeak-squeak-squeak! They also play with their monkey with a squeaker & rope arms & legs. They each get a leg & have a tug-o-war! When Gizmo was recuperating from surgery, he slept with his head on his fleece bunny at the vets & the next morning the technician said she heard 'squeak-squeak' from his crate! :)

Well, my little one has about 30 toys and he manages to play with each and every one. But without a doubt his favorites are small stuffed animals with squeakers in them. He also loves the animals that have the singing boxes in them (quacking ducks, barking dogs, etc.) but he's managed to break the mechanism in all of them...and then he brings them to me as if to say, "fix it, mommy." The squeakers seem more indestructible!
siobhan
Kami's favorite is "My Little Pony". She whips this toy back and forth so ferociously that you'd think she'd give herself a concussion! Her close second favorite is the purple dragon (not the purple dinosaur). This one's bigger than her, but she battles it into submission every morning. My little warrior!
Lisa Wolfe
My maltese loved small stuffed animals that sqeaked. He also loved rubber toys like lizards with long tails. I heard that dogs didn't see in color. I don't know if this is true or not, but Sunny tend to like his orange toys better. There were also some giant stuffed animals that he liked as well.
Charlynn
Munchkin and Amber loves small furry squeaky toys, small soft balls and roarhide chew bones (chicken flavor). Have a great day!
Zeyneb
Puff's favorite toy is, also, a cat toy. She has a little plush soccer ball that is supposed to have catnip in it. She loves that ball because it is small, light and she can even play with it herself if she wants to. She loves to hold it in her mouth and between her paws and roll on her back and chew on it. She has had it for many months and it not falling apart or been chewed apart. She also loves her 2 minature tennis balls which we use to play fetch. They are the perfect size for her mouth and they bounce better than the plush ball, so we mostly use these for outside play. She also likes to play with her squeeky carrot and she does occasionally chew on her rope toys, which I am grateful for, since it helps keep her teeth clean. But, to be perfectly honest, I think I am her favorite toy, he,he :)

Libby, your note made me realize that I failed to mention Angel's true favorite toy - empty egg cartons. He grabs them in his teeth, shakes vigorously or just rolls around on top of them. David - you sound like you have genuine reason to worry with Lexie and her proclivity for these small metal objects. How about getting a super-strong magnet from the hardware store and sweeping it across the floors? Hopefully they'll jump to you before Lexie gets to pounce!
siobhan
Tasha loves her squeeker toys, especially the furry ones. Bought her a tug toy {hadn't seen it before} it's about 2 ft. made of hmmm, maybe velour, at one end is a squeeker and the other end a rattle. Her and Sami play tug war with it, but when alone with it Tasha shakes it like crazy and it rattles. It's preety neat and she has a ball with it. But #1 ate the furry animal squeekers.
Dottie & Tasha
My Cuddles loves her lamb with a squeaker, and she also loves her bouncer ball...a ball shape with animal features. Mikey mainly plays with his rawhides.
Beverly
Out of the 72 toys (and counting) that my girls have, the top 5 would have to be: Fleece squeaker toys (hippo), Kong ball, Carrot and Spinach bones, an octopus with a rattle in it - really meant for a human baby, and a gorilla golf club cover. Oh! And they do like baby pacifiers. We just got the little battery-operated Maltese that flips, but they are not allowed to play with it. They like to watch it and bark at her inviting her to come and play with them!
Carrie, Sophie & Sasha
Ellie loves small, very soft and plush stuffed animals and beenie babies and I, too, worry about the little round plastic "beanies" inside. She also loves her tiny kong toy and we have lots of them since i reccommend them to clients. (They're great for putting food/treats in to keep dogs busy, esp. when owner's away.) Another toy she loves is a latex lollipop about 6" long that she loves to toss and catch and run with. Still another is her 6' dental rope twist. And I can't leave out her natural steralized bone. It's hollow and about 5" long and sometimes we put peanut butter inside. These are all easily washed with the kong and the bone going into the dishwasher cycle.
anne
Noah loves the nylabone wishbones(hard) and the plush squeaky toys, and the little ropes.
April B
Tasha's favorite toy is this extra large, very soft, rubber turkey leg. She as about 12 other toys but plays with this one about 95% of the time. I just bought what seems to be her second favorite toy last week which is a bright yellow, soft rubber toy shaped like a pacifier. She seems to like the softest rubber with the loudest squeek. She looks so adorable carrying around this huge drumstick!!!!!!!!
Rosemary and Tasha
hi everybody!!! turbo's favorite toy is a soft-bite lamb with squeaker. he also likes his beanie dolphin. for quiet time he plays with his nylabone edibles. (this isn't really a toy, but he spends quite alot of time with them.) These are his favorites probably out of about 50 toys.
Jade
Snowy's most fav. toys are those that squeaks or moo or bark etc. He gets so excited when he bites the toys n they emit a sound. He also loves his colourful ball n small ropes to play tug. He enjoys gnawing his nylabones n resting his tiny head on the body of Bobby (Snoopy soft-toy) and on the arms of Mad-dog (a brown lovable doggy soft-toy more than twice his size!)
Sera
Taffys favorite, in order are: Soft lambswool covered squeaky toy, the cloth stringy pull toy, her poor ragged stuffed raccoon, and the Kong toy that you put snacks into. Next to those its our hands, she loves the contact!!
Robin M. & Taffy
Lily's favorite toys have always been my feet! But when I just can't take it anymore, she has a knotted sock to play fetch and tug-o-war with. She also loves tennis balls, but manages to shred them to bits quite quickly. Anything out of the laundry (the more embarrassing, the better) is also a favorite. Zoe loves her cat ball w/ the bell inside and I finally gave up and "gave" her my white chenille fuzzy slippers. They're practically as big as she is, but she loves them to death and I can buy a different pair of slippers! She also enjoys empty soda cans to roll around on the tile floor (I think it's the noise) and her knotted rope. Of course, bones are a good pacifier as well.

Hey people!! One of my customers gave me a nice toy for my dogs that she made. You've seen those braided rope toys...my dogs love them. Well that's kinda what this toy looks like. She took her husband's old thermal underwear, cut it into strips and then braided it. Cool.
Bernie
My Kashi's favorite toy is the SQUEEKER thing inside of any toy! We finally found one type of ball that he can't get the squeeker out of, and he spends hours at a time trying. Also, soft stuffed animals that he can rip to shreds in a minute flat. Wen he was a baby, his favorite was "hedgehog," a beautiful stuffed furry thing as big as he was. (I think we went through 3 or 4 of those in his first month at home.) Now he LOVES to play tug-of-war with what we call "doggie." The first one WAS a doggie, but then was replaced by a lamb's wool elephant, but it's still called "doggie!" :-) He only gets to play tug-of-war, because the minute he's alone with it, he starts "eating" it. Of course, the all time favorite is playing BALL. My first Malt would chase the tennis ball for hours if we'd let him!

Favorites: Small stuffed toys that squeak or play music when squeezed (he figures out how to get the toy to play music) . He loves to play fetch with his stuffed toys - including the fake lamb's wool with squeeakers. I usually get baby toys and check them out for safety - most have some type of rattle in them and Bailey love to play fetch with these toys.

Mattie absolutely loves this rope thing that's tied in the middle but then frayed on both ends. It's like a knotted rope but it's a lot smaller and she can pick it up and carry it just by grabbing some frayed rope pieces. I know I'm not describing this very well, but it's so funny how she can find ways to play with this by herself. She picks it up real fast and then flips her head backward so that it goes flying, and then she tries to catch it before it hits the ground!! It's so funny!! She also loves her little "cat" ball with a bell in it. She will chase it forever as long as you'll keep throwing it!! She also sleeps with a little doggie stuffed animal that was my daughter's that looks like a little dalmation puppy. She also chews on her bones every now and then.
Kirsten & Mattie
Archie and Zoe absolutely LOVE their plastic Slinky toys! They prefer the standard sized ones, and manage to flip them, toss them, and sometimes stick them on their snouts and do an imitation of an elephant!! You all have GOT to get one for your babies!!!!
JudyS
DArby will not go anywhere without his lambswool (fake) bear we call "baby." He goes up tw flights of stairs into his crate in my bedroom and brings it to wherever I am...usually the basement in the evening. He rests his head on it and keeps it in his mouth when he jumps up on the bed or couch. He also loves to have me throw the "baby" and go fetch..over and over and over .....you get the picture. He also has the same type of toy in the shape of a bunny which he will also carry around...prefers to have them both if possible... Also like the ropes with the knots at the ends and nylabone in chicken flavor. Those are his "toys"..."Baby" is like his pacifier!!! Baby has lost the ability to squeek, but he gently bites on the squeeker anyway...like a baby sucking on a pacifier. Wait until he finds out I just bought him a stuffed camel too!!! My older lhasa just looks at him and walks away.... Oh, he also like an old jumbo plastic hair roller I threw down one day....took off the velcro...

Bee Bee has many toys, but his favorite is the soft plush toy shapped like a gingerbread man with the squeeker in it. He loves to play with that toy and squeek it all over the house

All of my Maltese like to play with small, fuzzy toys with squeekers in them. But Liz has a particular favorite that I didn't see anyone else mention when I read the answers. Her favorite toy is the soft floppy frisbee - the one made of rip-stop nylon with a rubber ring around it. She absolutely loves it. I throw it for her and 90% of the time, she catches it - but I don't throw it too high so she doesn't have to jump up. Once she catches it, she shakes it so hard, sometimes I wonder if she won't knock herself out. Sometimes she'll throw it for herself; most of the time she brings it back to me to throw again. After a while, she likes to start pulling at the nylon where it's stitched to the ring until she gets a hole started in it. Then she gets her nose in the hole and flips the frisbee up in the air, catches it, shakes it and flips it some more. She has a wonderful time all by herself if I'm not playing with her. The only problem with this being her favorite toy is that they aren't cheap and she goes through about 1 a month. Now I buy them by the dozen through a wholesale catalog! Liz's son, Taylor, also has a favorite - a stuffed hand-puppet that is a ghost with a mechanism inside that makes a ghostly laugh. Taylor runs around with his ghost and pushes at it with his nose or paw to make it laugh. Pam, Liz & Taylor

You Got me wear it hurts. As an Addicted Beanie Baby Collector I screamed out loud, OH NO! Not Lizzy. Linda try giving her Bean Spout Beanies, I'm still in shock. Just kinding with all of you. My Shayna loves to play tug-o'-war with dogging stuffed animals, especially squeaky red ones. KoKo is more of a chew stick kind of gal. But, give them a pigs ear and they are in "Doggy Heaven". I give each one an ear and they one starts to chew and the other lays there watching until it is her turn and they switch places. It is the funniest thing to watch.

Mikki has a favorite "Madd Dog" squeaky rabbit with long ears. She really used to like her frog, but I think the rabbit has taken over as the top toy now. She also likes her knotted sock and tennis ball. One thing that I haven't seen mentioned is an 'Icee' plastic top. Mikki likes to put her nose into it and scoot it all over the floor. It makes great noise! The only thing is it has to be replaced often. But my husband doesn't mind that.
Donna
my babies LOVE this little stuffed animal dalmation its tiny. archie also LOVES his fuzzy long purple snake/dragon.
rebecca- archie-zoe
Linda, My fur baby, Mitsia, loved beanie babies too!!!! We started with the original mini beanies from McDonald's. It makes me ill to find out how much some of those are worth now but they made the perfect toy for Mitsia. We let her play with one until she managed to get to the "beans" and throw it away and get a new one. (Of course we never let her play with them unattended for fear she might get to the beans and choke while we weren't there.) I still find thos little pellets everywhere, and she hasn't had a beanie baby in over a year!!!!!
Missy and Mitsia
My little Princess' favorite toy is a six inch plastic carrot. Then, a long stuffed rattle snake with a sweaker and rattle inside. She shakes it and tries to pin it down. She really loves a stuff animal that is about twice her own size. Finally ther is Pink Panther!
