Pancreatitis and colitis
by LISA BRANT
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
help! vets are stymied. maltese 14 mos. old has severe pancreatistis and colitis. have no idea what is causing problem. white cells normal, temp normal but vomiting. on iv liquids at hospital, giving anitbiotics but no real improvement. any thoughts on this?

DISCUSSION:

Ask the vet about irritable bowel. My Tobi had it although it is very uncommon for small dogs. There is a test for it and several courses of treatment. Good luck.

Lisa, my heart goes out to you. Wish I could be more enlightening. Have you looked in the archives for anything similar? And I would contact your breeder (if that's where you got your Maltese) or any other reputable Maltese breeder to see if they've experienced same. Don't give up. Keep searching for an answer. God bless!

Has your vet perscribed a special diet for your baby? I know that mine had colitis-type symptoms and once we changed his diet, he was as good as new. Keep us posted.

I think April has the right idea, changing the diet. Also, I don't know much about the diseases, but what is the solution for humans? Wouldn't it be similar to these babies? I do think I've heard that dietary changes are effective.

Unfortunately, two weeks ago Sasha had a bout with Pancreatitis. It is an inflammation of the pancreas, and the vet explained it is caused by too many fatty foods, mostly table food. (No table food fed to our babies!) Well, her diet was basically the same, except for the For-Bid we had been putting on her food. The vet didn't feel it was the For-Bid. I took in the ingredients list of everything we were giving Sasha and the vet was still puzzled as to what caused it. She put her on Hill's Prescription i/d for a few days and then told us to switch her off of puppy food since she is done growing at 7 months. She was also on Amoxicillin for 10 days. So far, she has been fine since. I'm so paranoid that giving her something new will just set her off vomitting again. Sorry I'm not much help, but just wanted you to know you are not alone. Let us know how it turns out and what precautions you are taking to prevent it from happening again.
