Litter training-accidents
by Lynn
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Hi all! I need some expert advice from those of you who have litter trained their babies. My little guy is 7 months old and we started litter training him when he was about 3 months old. He did very well in the beginning, having an accident every now and then, but now it's at least a daily basis. He started stooling in my guest bathroom alot so I put another litter box in there and sometimes he uses it, sometimes not. Is there anyway to get him to stop this? This morning I cleaned up 3 accidents, all of them he had to walk right past his litterbox to do. He gets praised for using his box, but maybe there is something I'm not doing? He has irritable bowel disease which makes him go more times a day, but I feel that he should still get to his box. This is also why we are litter training, if not I'd have to get up several times a night to take him out. I've thought about putting him in an enclosed place like our laundry room with his litterbox for awhile. All suggestions appreciated! You guys have helped so much in the past!
Thanks! Lynn :o)
DISCUSSION:
Lynn, I think it's back to basics for your little guy. Like you said, confine him for awhile like you did when he was a puppy. Rudy, who will be a year next week, had a relapse around 9 mos. I put the barriers back up to keep him in one area of the house and wouldn't let him have free range till after he had used his puppy john. Each time he did, I made the rest of the house his reward and made a real big deal about it. Good luck.

Hi Lynn, I don't know if you are using a real box or not but have you checked out the Puppy John (Jay's home page under Advertiser)? It's a wonderful training tool and is about the size of an open Times newspaper with a one inch lip all around. I've used one since I first got Bailey with no problems. I was thinking this might be a little easier than a box since your guy can just walk right on it. The only other thing is he still is very young and you really do have to have patience. Like kids, these little ones are all different and maybe he just needs some time. Good Luck!

Lynn, maybe the box isn't as clean as you think it is. Ahzsie started missing the paper (I use the pads for incontinent people) until I changed the paper after just a few spots. Now he goes there all the time. You might want to try those rather than litter. It also makes for easier travelling. Taking a pad with you is a whole lot easier than a bunch of litter!
