Black spot on Baby's skin
by Lydia/Pepper/Baby
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Hi Everyone, Each time I give Baby a bath (I keep forgetting to ask), I notice there is a black spot on the skin on her back. Unless it is my imagination, the spot appears to have gotten larger. It is not a lump it is just a discoloration on that area of the skin and it is grayish/black in color. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? I thought I would check with you guys before calling the vet. It seems like a call his office more often than the pediatrician!! Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

DISCUSSION:

Those black spots are normal. Alex has some little ones also on his back. If I remember well, there should be something in the archives about it.

Many Maltese with good genes for pigment will have greyish-black areas on their skin, especially if they are exposed to sunlight. We even sometimes see completely black skin on the topline area which is beautiful with the white hair coming down on each side. The pads of the feet will be shiny inky black and even the skin of the testicles may be black. If the skin seems raised or lumpy that would not be good. Next time you are in for shots have your vet. look at it, but I would not worry, it sounds to me like your Maltese just has good pigment.

I once heard someone refer to this as 'roaming pigment' - a dog with a tendency toward deep coloration of the points can definitely have dark spots elsewhere. As long as the spot is not raised or has reddish markd in or around it, it's perfectly normal.

I know exactly how you feel, but dont worry. This is perfectly normal. When Bee Bee was about 3 or 4 mths old I noticed that he got black spots on his stomach and on his head. At first I panicked, I just couldnt imagine what it could be. I spoke to the vet when I took him for his shots and the vet said nothing but pigmentation perfectly natural. Humans get freckles. The funny part is that during the winter months the spots went back to pink. Good luck with your baby.

My little guy got it too and was I worried. I thought it may be a reaction to the Frontline medication I use. I did show it to the vet who said it was normal. Bailey also has it at the base of his ears. I still wonder about the Frontline causing it though! Do you use Frontline for flea and tick control?

Lydia, Baxter has it more than Rudy. He has it most prominently where the hair parts along the top of his nose. I always thought it was a defect, but I've read a lot that says it's desirable.

Gizmo has pinkish/beige spots. He looks so funny in the bath when they really show!Chiclet has ink black points and no spots! A friends little Malteaser started getting brown spots when she was 8 mos old. [The Malt, not my friend!] LOL

Don't worry about those spots, they are considered desirable. It is pigment and the sun seems to bring it out. Winter it seems to get lighter or dissappear due to the lack of sunlight. I cann't imagin your vet telling you it was a reaction to something,oh well! Mary Palmer

Maisy and Beau are kind of polka dotted on their tummies. When I bathe them, I realize, they're kind of polka dotted all over! I also got freaked out; thinking that they must have laid on grass with fertilizer or something, so I went to the vet. Fortunately he's nice and didn't make me feel dumb, but said they're quite normal, just pigment differences.
