keeping hair short OK?
by Kay
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
I am interested in owning a Maltese but I think they are much more attractive in the puppy length hair. Is this an option? Real hard to do? Scissors or electric? Thanks

DISCUSSION:

Puppy length is really almost recommended for non-show dogs. It is easier maintenence and less messy. I definitely recommend it.

Kay, it's perfectly ok to keep a maltese in a puppy cut. You still will have to brush them daily to keep their hair from matting (especially behind the ears and feet). I get my 2 groomed about every 5 weeks or so; so I don't do it myself, but plenty on MO do. I also think they're cute in this cut.

Kay, both of my girls has short puupy cut. This is perfectly alright. I think they look so cute with puppy cut. I just do not know which is the best way to cut their hair(scissors or electric). I use a professional groomer. Have a great day!

Kay, Just look through the photos at this site and you will see all kinds of short do's. I keep Comet short and groomed every three weeks, but the groomer only charges $20. I would like to groom Comet myself and many on this site do. It's important to get your doggie used to grooming early. I stroke Comet's nose, and between his eyes, massage his ears and even stick my fingers in them!, massage his feet, getting in between the toes, and wind his tail both ways besides brushing him. I believe all of this has made him feel comfortable while grooming. The first time he was groomed, the groomer was amazed at how good a puppy can be! Try it, you'll be glad you did. BTW, Comet has two pictures in the photo album.

I have been letting Lucy's hair grow out for 3-4 months now. I have found that it mats up alot more just with the few extra inches on it. I have to brush her daily. If I miss one our grooming session is not any fun at all. I just can't understand why Lucy has such a problem with me working on her knots for an hour. I am probably going to trim her back to a puppy cut. She is beautiful either way and grooming time is minimal in the shorter cut.
DeeDee
Dee-Dee is so right about grooming matted hair being no fun for anyone. Our babies are like people. Not all humans look best in the same cut and not all Maltese do either. Size, leg length, hair texture and curliness, -- just find a good groomer and experiment until you find something you both like!

DeeDee, short cuts are great and there are so many variations. Baxter is cut at about 1 1/2" and Rudy is about 3-4". They have very different coats. It's all a matter of preference. With two who are constantly wrestling, pulling on each other's ears and just being dogs, full coats are a curse. I do, however, keep their ears and tails, which is usually silkier than the rest of the coat, rather long to keep the maltese "look."
Marie
Dee Dee, I have it both ways. Shelby, who has very silky hair, has mid-lenth hair (about halfway to the floor). She's not prone to matting so this is do-able. I also have to brush twice daily though to keep her looking great and to stop any matting. Nikki has curlier, cotton candy type hair that mats easily so I keep her hair short (except for long on the ears and face). I brush her each morning to stop matting and to keep her looking great too. She wouldn't look right with long hair (she'd be too bushy). As others have said, it depends on what you like, the hair type and what looks best on your fur babe!
