Liver & Protein
by maureen
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
I've been told my two Malts are prone to the liver shunt problem and that I should limit the amount of protein they eat. Benji and Chip are 5 years old and have always been on Prescription Diet KD. I'm wondering if that information is still accurate. Does anyone know what the current info is? They don't seem to suffer from the limited diet, in fact, they are thriving. Benji is 6 lbs and Chip is 5. They eat lots of carrots and peas (their favorite). They will do ANYTHING for a baby cookie. Any help you can give me will be appreciated. Tx
DISCUSSION:
My Maltese underwent a liver shunt operation several months ago. A low protein diet is essential ie. 2/3 rice - 1/3 meat. If possible could you advise why your vet feels they are prone to liver shunt.

When they were puppies, she did some blood tests. She had me not feed them, then took blood. Then I fed them a rich canned food and she took some more blood. She said that the levels were somewhat high (or low - I forget which) and advised that I keep them on the low protein diet. She advised of some possible symptoms to look out for. I haven't had them back for the tests again since they are doing fine. I just don't know whether to worry or not.

My boy was great until he had a reaction to anti-inflammatory medication. Only symptom was excessive drinking.
