beard staining
by Amy Stewart
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Would anyone have any tips for keeping the beard/mustache area clean and dry? Ruby is 6 mos. old and now that her coat is getting longer, she seems to constantly attract dirt to this area. She is not bothered so much by tear staining, but from grass and dirt stains on her beard/mustache area caused from her favorite pasttime of rooting around in the backyard for crickets and other small insects! It is also getting more difficult to keep this area dry, and I feel like I am constantly washing and drying her face! Would a water bottle help instead of a water bowl? I don't crate her during the day (unless I am gone) so I am not sure what I would clip a water bottle onto. This is our first maltese and I would appreciate hearing from some veteran owners/breeders. This is a great site. I refer to it often when I have a question/problem about our little "jewel"!! Thanks

DISCUSSION:

Amy: I understand about the dirty face. My Sara has the same problem. I really don't know a solution but have found a way to wash the face without getting the rest of the body wet. I purchased a large plastic infant bib. I put Sara in one side of a double sink with the bib tied on backwards (if it has a pocket), then drape the bib into the other sink so the water will run into it and keep Sara dry except for the face of course. Hope this helps.

A water bottle would definately help. Alex isn't in his crate offen anymore and the door is always open ; I keep the crate mostly because of the water bottle. If anyone else has an idea were to fix the water bottle besides the crate, I would love to hear it.

I also prefer the water bottle, because it not only keeps Puff's hair dry, it keeps the water fresh and clean. Janine, I was having the same thoughts as you because Puff, also, doesnt use the crate much and I was only using it to hold the water bottle. I an in the process of trying to design a wooden holder that I can attach to the refrigerator with magnets. I'll see if I am sucessful :)

Hi, I had the same problem with Quigley and his wet face. I orderd a glass water bottle and figured I would have to make a stand or something. As it turned out the metal "T" holder for the crate can be turned around and screwed into the wall. Works great!

Sandy, If your invention works, I will be your first coustomer! I would like to buy a water bottle, but where to put it? I can't screw it into the wall, need something more portable. You could be a millionaire if you figure something out. If my hubby was more handy, I would have him build something. Let us know!!!!

When you don't have time for the face washing you can use regular cornstarch as a dry cleaner. Pack the cornstarch into the dirty beard and then brush it out. Do not get this onto the body coat as it can strip the natural oils from long hair. I always keep my Maltese away from dirt, it's easier than all that cleaning up!!

I use a wet cotton ball on Bear's eyes and face every day. He now realizes what's going on and sits still for it (usually)!! Then I use a tiny comb to comb his face hair. He's so beautiful.
