Brushing
by Roxie
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Moose is 6 months old. He doesn't like to get brushed. He only wants to bite the brush. I try to brush him everyday. I even tried to use 2 brushes-one for him to bite and the other brush him with. Whichever one I use to brush is the one that he wants to chew on. Any suggestions?
DISCUSSION:
Keep on trying ! Alex is 15 months old now and he still doesn't like to be brushed. He also trys to get the brush to take it away from me.

Roxie, have you tried giving Moose a treat while you are brushing him, that way he may begin to associate brushing with something pleasant instead of a chore he just has to put up with.

Treats is what worked for my Murphy. I started when he was real young and it took a while, but eventually he'd come running when I pulled out the brush. I think he associated it both with a treat and with some special attention. I'm trying the same approach with my new baby, Tucker. He currently isn't thrilled with being brushed, but the treats keep his interest.

Roxie, When you groom him do you use a spray conditioner as you do? Even a little water misted over the coat. Never ever brush a dry coat. Also are you brushing from the ends of the hair shaft(farest from the body) first? Then work your way up the hair shaft. I agree treats can help alot, but I prefer to give after the grooming. My babys jump all over me when we finish, they know what is coming the reward. The only time my little ones try to bite the comb or brush is if I unknowingly hit a snarl. Hope this helps. MaryP
