Carriers that you wear
by Jeannie and Ellii
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Hello! I really would like to get a carrier for Ellii. You know, the kind that you wear. I don't know whether or not I can print the "brand" name, or whether or not you can respond with a "brand" name. There are a number of styles out there. All hang on the front of you with the straps going over your shoulders. Some that have the tail and legs hanging free, and some that are like a little sack that you put them in. My question is, has anyone out there had any experience with either of these styles? The ones I am looking at are in the dog fancy magazine. They all look pretty secure. I am wondering if the ones that are like little sacks get too warm and confining, or if the ones that allow the legs to hang free are too hard on their tails. ( I guess you have to stick their tails through some hole in it? ) Also, I read that the ones that have their legs hanging free have velcro, which concerns with with Ellii's hair getting wrapped up in it. Well anyway, I would love any input that you could give me. I will wait to order one until I get some responses. Thanks!
DISCUSSION:
Jeannie,When I was in the pet suppy store, I tried on the style where the legs hang out and thought that the hole could bind or chafe Bailey's legs and I would not be aware of his discomfort. I like the tote style bag where there is a scooped out opening for their heads to stick out. I carry it on my shoulder and Bailey can lie or stand and watch. I have 3 of these! It is not the totally enclosed style - the head sticks out.
I also have the back pack style dog carrier (sack style, no holes for legs) which I used when in Acadia Natl Park this week and we hiked a mountain trail. Bailey loved it. What a life, to be caried up a mountain. Of course, he was peeking out and got lots of admiring comments from the other hikers. Sometimes he just nestled down into the "bag". We could not bear to leave him behind so this type of carrier was best suited for that. It needs a second person to keep an eye on him and to strap him in. I have other carriers for other occasions - who can leave these babies behind??? My other carriers are "enclosed" but have ventilation netting. I only use them when in a restarurant, i.e. for a relativelyl brief time.

Wow! I would love a carrier for Toby. Linda, where did you get the variety you describe? Waiting for the info! Thanks in advance

I have a "pooch-in-a-pouch" for Loki. He weighs in at about 5.5 lbs. The pouch hangs in front and Loki sits in it, there is a space for his tail and his hind legs to go through. He loves it. I haven't tried the other kind yet, but this one doesn't seem to bother him at all.

Jeannie Lynda's right it depends on what your doing I also have several types. The one in front with the legs hanging out is great for bike riding and long hot summer days little air. The tote is also great for walking ( TOO HOT FOR FLORIDA GREAT FOR N.C) I love the backpack we used it hiding up in N.C. with Orion. The traveling with vents is good for carring them into places where sometimes you really don't want people to notice pets. Lynda you also sound like you too like to take these babies with you. I take mine everywhere. Where alwas looking for new toys. I'm alwas glad to hear people think I same way my husband and myself do about our little white fur ball. Thanks guys

Laney,I got the back pack style from the rc steele catalogue... another catalogue also sells it, but for more $ and without the optional visor (sun protection). Supposedly it can be used as a car seat as well, but it looks to me as if it would not be secure in case of an accident. I am not sure which carrier you wante info on, so I'll keep writing. My gorgeous vented patent leather tote is made by Sherpa (it is roomier and more stylish than their "airline" enclosed style). You may have to contact sherpa in NYC since in all my travels and visits to dog stores, I have only seen it in one specialty dog store. My tote with the head sticking out is available at limited places. Karen's for pets and people on Lexington ave NYC has a large selection. Before I found that source, I was concerned that my current bag would wear out and I would be unable to replace it... so I sewed one and it came out gorgeous. It is black and I brought it to professional embroiderers to have my baby's name embroidered on it in red. It came out gorgeous! People have asked me to make them for them but my sewing machine had a difficult time stitiching through the very thick layers. Hope this helps and that Toby enjoys his travels with you.

hi! i know a few people who have that pouch-carrier. they like it. I didn't like it because it snugs close to your doggie's body. I settled on a totebag with mesh sides and a hard bottom. it is about 9 inches high - plenty high for otto to stand and poke his head over the side.. he rests his chin on the edge and dozes. i like the hard bottom - it lets air ventilate through the bag. he loves going out in his tote and ALWAYS gets many admiring greetings from everyone!

I have the Pet Pouch. I can't say I like it. I wore it around the house just for test. I didn't feel to comfortable in it because I didn't thing Sunny seemed too comfortable. Not only does is have holes for the legs but also the tail, so you don't have to worry about the tail being scrunched. They say it's very confortable, but it's just my opinion that it's not. Maybe you'll like it. I want to buy the enclosed pouch, I think I'd be happier with that. I think it's so funny how us maltese people end up with several of pretty much the same item. I must have bought about 3 collars and leashes before I finally found the right one. I'll probably end up doing the same with pouches and I'll have one for each day of the week. It makes me laugh. These things aren't cheap.

Jeannie, I have the front carrier that leaves the "arms" and legs free and the tail coming out the hole. I was constantly checking to see that Baxter's tail wasn't being rubbed raw. Also, although still a puppy, Baxter was pretty big when I was using it (7-8 lbs?) and I found the straps cut into me on the sides. And, I was never really convinced he was comfortable in it. Now that I have Rudy, who is about 5 1/2 lbs, I can't find it. Oh, well.
P.S. to Linda R - it was great to meet you in Maine last week - what a treat - give Bailey a squeeze for me. He's such a sweetie.

Jeannie - I tried the carrier that allows for the feet to hang free and Lucy did not like it. She would try to put her hind legs on the edges and stand up - she did not like having her feet hang loose. I made my own carrier that she can lay down in and she loves that. I did not spend a lot of time trying to get her use to the other style. So it's possible she would have learned to enjoy it. I just went ahead and made my own.

Hi! Thank you all for your input. I laughed when I read your reply Charlynn. You are right! These things are not cheap, and yet we all keep looking for the 'perfect' one for our baby. teehee. Ellii is worth it though. Thanks again everyone!

I bought the backpack-style carrier for Sunny. It has worked very well, especially since she is heavy and it does not strain your back the way the front carriers do. There are no holes for the dogs legs, it is a heavy-duty mesh sack that is attached to the frame. It has a safety harness that you can attach to the dogs collar, however I never need to use it because she is very compliant while riding in it. The only adjustment I needed to make was folding a towel and placing it in the bottom of the carrier so that she would be elevated enough to have her head above the top rim.
