Paw Chewing
by Dan & Donna
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
We have two 9-year old Maltese babies; one who constantly chews on his paw. Several vet visits and allergy tests later have proven nothing wrong. One vet said it's a habit and because Jaxon is older, he may never "outgrow" it. Any suggestions or like situation? Thank you.
DISCUSSION:
Cubbie has started doing this too. Our vet said it was nothing to worry about. I noticed that when it's hot, he licks himself more. So maybe it's Cubbie's way of cooling off.

Cody is six years old and he licks his paws AND chews his nails!! I was concerned and, like you, questioned his vet. He said that it was nothing to worry about and that dogs sometimes do those things when they're bored!! One good thing - Cody keeps his nails so short that I never have to trim them!!

Hi ! I have a 6 year old female who rips her her out of her paws every so often. My vet checked her with ultra violet light and decided it was a fungus ? gave a spray and anti-biotics. That was fine for awhile, she's just started up again and now I use bleach water, just dip her paws, that's what soldiers did during war for athletes foot..same thing ! There are probably some over-the-counter sprays you can get too !( in the foot-care section)

I'm sorry Renee, but putting your Maltese's paws in bleach water,(even duluted) is much too strong for these delicate babies!! Please consult your vet on this, as this is the wrong way of treating this problem I'm sure!

Lucy does the same thing. I just assumed she was bathing herself kind of like a cat. She does not chew herself raw (which I have read before that some Malteses have done). She just lays down and licks and chews. I am very careful not to allow her to go on grass or places she could get any poison on her feet because of this.

Try rubbing fresh garlic on the paws.

Marilyn ! It is NOT wrong ! it is not any different from you or I putting our hands in diluted bleach water ! Even my VET who is the VERY BEST in Metro Atlanta agrees ! Dr. ORR
